New York Tips

Hey all,
I'm off to the big apple on 11th February and i was just seeing if anyone had any tips for me? I used to live there but i'm sure it's changed in the 11 years i've been gone.. So has anyone got any tips e.g
Where to go?
What to do?
Where to buy the cheapest gear?
Where to eat?
How to deal with money - e.g where to get it converted etc.

Any help very much appreciated!
Will :o

  • Have you tried the search engine?

This question comes up every single day

    Hope that helps
  • You used to live there but you want to know what to see and do? I can't believe it will have changed that much in 11 years.

Yeah i did try the search engines, and they just came up with sponsored sites. I tried the MSE forum search and nothing came up aswell. But cheers for being patronising.

I got lots of info from this site before I went last November and had a great time. The one place I couldn't get to see was the federal reserve bank, you need to book 7 days in advance (Sucurity is tight for obvious reasons). I think my best advice if doing the sights would be to get on one of the red buses. Our tickets lasted 48hrs and included an evening tour as well as a ticket out to the statue of libery and ellis Island. Do the Statue of Liberty first thing, we queued for about 5/10 minutes but when we came down the queues were huge, and treat yourself to a self guided 'tour', the people who didn't didn't have a clue what they were looking at from the top. When your shopping at Macys, don't forget your discount card, again try and get it early and in the basement they have a cloak room( ticketed FOC) where you can leave coats etc and shopping bags as you complete your shopping. This was wonderful, I could shop without being hot and bothered or carring heavy coats and then off load any heavy bags and continue shopping in comfort - every shop should have this facility. Grand Central Station I loved, and it's free.
I know the assumption is to presume newyork123 has already done/seen the sights, but how many of us have lived in our own towns and cities and only done the 'tourist' attractions when we have visitors?
We lived just outside London for a couple of years and the amount of 'locals' who had never done the 'tourist' attractions was huge.

We've just been and the best thing we had was the New York Pass. Quite expensive but gets you in to pretty much all the main attractions for free, and you can go back to them every day if you want. Also gets you discounts in some restaurants/tours etc. You can have a $10 credit at Planet Hollywood so you can almost eat for free (+tax and tip) every day if you choose cheap options from the menu.

A REALLY good cheap restaurant is "Pam's Real Thai Food" on the corner of 9th Ave and 49th street. We ate really nice thai food there, and had two courses + a couple of beers/glasses of wine for less than a tenner each!

Some organisations do tours for free (well, they ask for a voluntary contribution but there's genuinely no pressure to pay up or to pay the suggested amount.) We did an excellent tour of Grand Central (I think it was a Thursday lunchtime) on this basis (although we did pay in fact)

I don't mind helping out people with specific questions about New York, but when looking for tips, it really is lazy not to do a search.

    I entered New York and

    came up plus MANY others.

Wise Investor was suggesting you do a search because this questions DOES come up nearly every day.

I lived in New York in 1994 and have been a frequent visitor since (last there 2 weeks ago) and the only differences that I can think of is that Top of the Rock is now open (observation platform at the top of the Rockerfeller Centre) and the metro uses swipe cards and not coins.
