An update from my call to Smyths earlier. I had asked for them to send me the engineers report. They rang and are giving me the refund after all as the report was inconclusive!!! Pulling a fast one I think

Excellent! They were definately at their work!
As already mentioned, if your neighbour is getting a signal with the aerial in the roofspace, the you should have no problems with an external aerial. Having it in the roofspace can cut the signal by as much as 50%.
In addition its possible to put boosters on the mast to increase the signal if it was weak. Thats how people in Belfast can pick up RTE etc.

If you want to prepare for TV's in other rooms, look into a "loftbox" , (do a google search) Satcure do a guide to installing.
Its well within the scope of any DIYer. I have used one for years and I get Freeview, Freesat, CCTV down 1 cable into each of 4 rooms.
  • btw there is no such thing as a digital aerial, some aerial outfits play on the fact that people are asking for a digital aerial and will bump up prices, as long as its set up right an aerial will pick up digital signals too.
Just wondered where OP is based, in Coleraine there is no problems picking up a freeview signal from Divis.

Unfortunately, they heard "digital aerial" and took it as a cue to try it on...
    A disreputable way to behave.
While there is a chance that a different aerial might be needed, they would not likely be able to tell without looking and their very first step should have been to explain that.

We get freeview okay through the existing aerial (though it could probably do with re-positioning to improve the signal), and freesat works just fine through an aging Sky dish.
    YMMV
