Outlook Express phantom email problem

I have 2 separate issues with OE. I have been using it for years.

In the last six months I keep getting the little envelope icon on the menu at the bottom right of my screen even when I don't have a new email and the little ping sound that alerts you to a new email.

Today, in the actual OE menu on the left hand side, I am getting the little blue "1" icon next to a specific account to show I have a new email. However, I do not have a new email. This is happening every 5 minutes along with the ping sound. I have tried deleting various emails and sent myself an email to see if this would change anything but it hasn't. It is like there is a permanent glitch.

2 of the accounts I use are Hotmail accounts and they don't seem to be the problem. The problem seems to be happening mostly with a Sky email account.

Can anyone help?
