What are my refund chances?

Just wondering - have a booked BA flight to Detroit at £309 done a few weeks ago before the threatened strike action. Now, the same flight is reduced by £50 (same dates, times). Does anyone think I have the proverbial snowball's chance of getting the £50 back off BA or willI be fobbed off with "that was the price when you booked"?

Cheers

  • Not a chance. At the time you booked, you entered into a contract with BA for them to fly you on an agreed date. If they broke the contract (cancelled flight/strike action etc) then they would have to compensate you in some way. For simply adjusting their prices by supply and demand, they aren't under any obligation to refund you. What if it had gone the other way and the flight was suddenly oversold due to a conference or similar in Detroit and the advertised fare rose substantially? Would you expect BA to call and say, we need more money or we'll sell your seat to someone who'll pay the higher price?

BA's website has a dynamic pricing engine that moves the prices according to supply and demand. The cabin crew strike threat hasn't helped their advance bookings and now they are reacting to reduced demand.

    Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. :(

  • Look at the upside, most BA flights are going with very few passengers at the moment, so if you're travelling soon, you'll probably end up with a whole row of seats to yourself!

There are pros and cons of booking early/late.

I have left it too late to book holidays before and not been able to get what I wanted (and in one case time of work).

By booking early you have secured your place.
If you had left it late you might have got it cheaper but you might also have found you couldn't have got the flights as they were all gone.
