Welcome to the MSE forums Stranraerlad.
I believe the Powergen device inserts a 1409 prefix on all your calls to send them out on the Powergen virtual system. I have no idea what, if any, saving is made by the use of their system but I doubt it's much.
The UK telephony market has moved on since the use of such devices was quite common and, now, there are numerous better ways to cut your call costs.
You will see 2 'clickable' links within the red text of my signature below. The first (the 'HERE' link) is my regularly-updated set of personal recommendations for those with a BT residential landline. The second is the MSE article on the whole subject. Please click on each and then come back with any queries you may have.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks for the welcome Heinz. Up until the last bill that I had from powergen they showed the amount I saved using there system. As I only have to unplug the "PIG" from my line I think I will check out how much my bills are with BT before I consider the PRIMUS 2 option.
Many thanks and keep up the good work for the consumer.

Fair enough. I'd urge you to consider at least getting a 18185 account though - 5p per call for a call of any duration at any time to any UK 01/02 number - and savings on calling mobiles too.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Powergen are scrapping their phone supply and trying to get people to go with Pipex. i had bad time with the Pipex group so my parents, who are with Powergen , when they told them they decided to go to another company for their phonebill they demanded for the PIG to be in the post next day and switched their line off! my parents can still use the BT line but normally theres a polite process to be followed is'nt there, just like the switch with gas or electric.they're changing supplier for their gas and electric now as well ,because of Powergen's rudeness.0
