Not spending money is boring!

I'm seriously skint so for the last couple of months have been avoiding all non-essential spending, and the sense of... not righteousness, but like I'm doing something good, has carried me through it. But I'm just getting bored of that feeling now!

I used to spend a lot of money online shopping, on high street sites and on eBay. Do any fellow fashion fans have any tips for what they use their web time for? I always find myself going back to Topshop.com, even though I know that I'm just torturing myself.

How about trying selling things on ebay as as time filler? and a money booster?

Or in fact you could set yourself a challenge to sell say £50 worth of stuff and then to treat yourself with spending that, or some of it, on ebay for new purchases.

  • I'm doing that at the moment, I've currently got £35 in my Paypal account and still have some auctions running. That money may have to go on Christmas presents though, so I can't start thinking of it as mine just yet.

Could you learn to sew? Sewing machines turn up on my local Freecycle now and again and there are lots of tutorials and blogs online. I sew and it's great finding new things to do with my old clothes.
  • Have you got Christmas presents to make/buy? Get going on those and it will give you something to do!

You could write your xmas cards, make some decorations, put up your tree. Lots of thrifty things to be done at xmas :o)

    Well done on the ebaying.

Do you read fashion blogs? There always seem to be lots about cheap ways to update outfits by combining different things or customising with bits of accessories / haberdashery items etc.
Or how about trying your hand at making some clothing items from scratch - lots of online blogs and vidoes posted showing this sort of thing?
    (edit sorry hermia, cross-posted)

  • I can sew (a bit) but don't enjoy it, but making Christmas decorations is an idea!

I did used to read fashion blogs, but I kicked the habit. I find that rather than making me want to try out new combinations and accessorise they just made me want to buy things!
  • Oh dear. I was hoping that this 'flush' of money saving enthusiasm would be a permanent thing but now I suspect it may be temporary as you have found Timefortea!

I doubt I shall find Topshop a problem though as I am about 20 years to old for it:rotfl:

Do you have your own home? Could you do all those revolting jobs that get put off. Not exciting I know, but you do get a good sense of satisfaction once they are done.

How about fitness? I have just started power walking, properly with weights that is. It is free and very good for you.

  • I think I know where you're coming, timefortea.
I have to keep off the computer when I feel like that, as it's boredom that often leads to me shopping online in the first place.
I don't do window shopping :rotfl:
  • It is hard at first timefortea, it has taken me a while to get out of the habit. i find the forums really help me. try joining some like the no spend day challenge and sealed pot, soon you will be getting the satisfaction from saving money and not from spending it. Stick at it, you can doooo it :)

  • I play games on gameduell.com and by playing the free daily game, I'll be able to withdraw around £60 total for this year. I also play the free training games if I'm bored, but I'm looking forward to withdrawing my winnings in a couple of weeks. That'll go towards a kindle.

I'm still too new to post links, but hopefully you can find the site ok.
