"For Ni-Cd and NiMH batteries, the voltage across the battery increases slowly during the charging process, until the battery is fully charged. After that, the voltage decreases, which indicates to an intelligent charger that the battery is fully charged. Such chargers are often labeled as a ΔV, "delta-V," or sometimes "delta peak", charger, indicating that they monitor the voltage change."

Essentially they are able to detect the changing state of charge of each battery and adapt their output accordingly.
  • Quite possible.

What does Delta V mean and how does it charge better?

Is there any independent testing that is available to back this up?

In reality what real difference does this mean to average Joe who has probably lost the batteries by charge 50?

As it MSE why more than one charger if that one does the job 95% plus?

For pretty much same price you get one that does what has been explained several times already. Majority of people use AA or AAA batteries and these chargers all do those.
Normally intelligent chargers are more expensive (especially for leisure batteries and such), not so in this case

People can make up their own minds which is better. Losing your batteries obviously isn't MSE either
  • Go for any Ansmann charger...these are top, top quality premium (German brand with 3 year warranty) chargers which have delta V protection included as standard. I have the Ansmann Energy 4 (direct plug in type) and very happy with it...it checks each battery individually, charges and refreshes - all done automatically. Best £30 i ever spent! Have a look at the reviews :)

So does the less than half the price 7-day-shop one - how is the £30 one "better" ?

Comes with a 3 year warranty and is manufactured by a premium battery manufacturer - you are paying for a better quality charger which is reflected in the price. In case you haven't heard of Ansmann, they are the 'Miele' of batteries/chargers. You get what you pay for :)
  • With white goods I would agree - with small low end cheap electrical bits I am not so sure!

Fairy snuff more than happy with my choice for what it is/does.:silenced:

I don't lose the batteries but someone else always does.;)

If you're after the Rolls Royce of battery chargers, you probably want to have a look at the Powerex MAHA C9000 WizardOne.

Not strictly a 'moneysaving' device, but probably up there for the OP's 'best charger' question.

I've never had a battery charger die before 3 years, tbh I can't remember a charger that has ever died on me.

An earlier poster wrongly stated that NiMH bateries do not suffer the so-called 'memory effect' and should not be discharged. As it's slightly off-topic I'll just quote a link which people can follow if they are confused. There are plenty of others out there that accurately describe the effect in this class of battery.

As for chargers, Maha is a reliable brand (you can find them via eBay), though I personally use a LaCrosse, which has been excellent. Don't waste your money on a cheap charger - it will cost you a lot more in the long run.
