Would you eat this?

I cooked some savoury mince on Saturday evening and I've stupidly left it in the pan (sealed) since then!

Didn't really want to waste it but would it actually be safe to eat?

    What's in it?
    How cool is your kitchen?
    Does it smell ok?

I personally wouldn't. 24 hours is my limit and thats in the fridge.

I know, and do appreciate that you don't want to waste it. But the other isn't worth it.

    Hi Lindsay,

I wouldn't personally as my kitchen has been warm for the last few days. It will depend on so many variables that only you can answer. Because we can't see or smell it, we can't really give you good advice on an internet forum.

If it was me, I would be dubious about eating meat that had been sitting at room temperature for two days, but I hate waste so would probably still be inclined to look at it, if it looked ok, then I'd sniff it, if it smelled ok then I'd taste a tiny bit, and finally decide whether or not it's worth the risk.

I'm afraid that no one here can tell you whether or not it's safe to eat so it's really up to you to make the decision.

I'll add your thread to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates thread later as your query may help others in the same postition decide what to do.

    Hi Lindsay C

Personally if it smelled ok I would eat it. Although as CH27 has mentioned it would depend on how cold your kitchen was and what else was in it. My kitchen is quite a cold room so I have eaten mince (chilli, bolognese etc) which has been left in the pan 2-3 days before as long as it smelled ok.

If you're not comfortable eating it or are unsure then it might be best to leave it. What's right for one person isn't necessarily right for everybody :)

Should be fine ... trust your own common sense, and heat it thoroughly.
  • Thanks everyone, I think you've just confirmed to me what I already knew - get rid! With my stomach it just wouldn't be worth it - oh well better see what else I can do for tonight :)

48 hours in a warm kitchen really is pushing it. I agree.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I tend to eat with my brain and my eyes.

  • Hi,

I would eat it, just heat it up well, wash down with 3/4 bottles of Tuborg. fine.

Made a mug of coffee last night with some skimmed milk, didn't notice until I was nearly finished that it was curdled, no probs, this morning.
