I have a program that will not run in XP or Vista or Windows 7.
It will only run in Windows 95 or 98.
After weeks of trying to get it to run in Windows 7 the only solution I have come up with is to install Windows 95 or 98 on a separate spare hard disk and put it in my computer when necessary.
I will only probably need to run this program once or twice a month which is why I have decided to do this.
In the past I have had computers with windows 95 and 98 so I still have a back up file with the necessary product keys, the only thing I don't have are CDs of Windows 95 or 98.
Any idea where I could get one, preferably for free?

Instead of loading up 98 on a totally different PC look at using a "Virtual Machine"
lets you run another OS from your desktop.
try either :
VMWare:

or
VirtualBox

Just install the program and then stick in your Win98 disk and run through the wizard to install Win98 in a virtual machine.
you then can use it like a normal PC when ever you need that particular program.Laters

Special Edition?
I'd forgotten about that.
98SE would be fine.0 -
look at using a "Virtual Machine"
I might give it a try if I can get a 98 CD.
I did try windows virtual XP but that didn't work for my program.
I remember the person who wrote the program was going to update it for XP but sadly he died before he could.0 -
I'll look for my copy after lunch.
Meanwhile, I'll leave you with the original hashes.

I expect that you have already tried this but just in case: Have you had a go at running the program in Compatability Mode in one of the later Windows versions (XP, Vista or 7).
Open a window on the disc that contains the exe file.
Right click on the exe file.
Choose Properties
Click on Compatability tab
Tick the box marked "Run this program in compatability mode for"
and select Windows 95 or Windows 98 from the drop down box.
It does not always work, but many old programs will succumb to this.
Edit : Also works for old equipment for which there have not been updated drivers produced. Right click on the driver file.0 -
Assuming you have a pukka registration key then there are no shortage of torrents for a windows 98 cd. Or pm me if you're desperate... I think I even have my windows 3.0 floppies somewhere...0

You can also run Microsoft's own Virtual PC, and set up a Virtual machine to run the software that way.

I'm sure I have original genuine CD copies of Windows 95 and 98 if you need. I could also make an image of them available for download, if you don't want to risk a torrent site.0
