Help with understanding Utility Warehouse philosophy

I am a couple months into the utility warehouse, dual fuel, cash back card deal, and i am struggling to understand how it is cost effective and/or saving me money.
I have been trying to use my cash back card as much as possible to supposedly earn discounts off my energy bill. Looking at my recent bill, I have amassed £38 discount from using my cash back card, but all this seems to have done is reduce the amount i pay by direct to cover my energy bill by £38. In my mind, this has not reduced the cost of my energy by £38, but simply that there is £38 less on my account to cover my bills? Admittedly, It has reduced my payment by £38, but i fail to see how this has reduced my actual energy consumption bill? Add to this the fact that there is a standing charge for both gas and electricity, and the monthly cost of having two cash back cards, also, on closer inspection of my bill it seems i am paying VAT on my monthly direct debit amount rather than my actual energy usage.
The actual per kWh prices maybe cheaper or comparable to other utility suppliers, but adding the extra VAT and standing charges and card charges, i am wondering whether this is such a good deal if there is no real cash back card discount off the actual energy usage bill.
Can someone please shed any light on how this scheme is supposed to be saving me money. I am hoping for some clarity before i speak to the utility warehouse and get fobbed off.
Apologies if this has been covered many times before.

Have you read the dedicated thread about utility warehouse?
Obviously not or you would never have joined utility warehouse.
They are one of the most expensive providers in Britain.

Good morning.
I have replied to your similar query in the UW thread. Hopefully that makes sense, but if you need any additional information please don't hesitate to get in touch.
