since when did the word 'plus' mean 'included'?

Options
Hi,
I opened an account with the West Brom Buildings Society with the headline rates listed as 3.17% plus 1.42 uncondition bonus (up to 31st oct 2012).

It turns out that the interest is not 'plus' but actually 'included' in the 3.17%.

I was looking forward to an additional 1.42% on top... but I was told today this was not the case and that the interest is included and that the word 'plus' meant it was actually 'inluded'!!!!

Is this normal practice to use the word 'plus' to mean 'included' in the world of savings?

  • I would have been very suspecious of this since their is no way somebody is going to offer a rate of 4.6% for 1 year fixed rate.
  • Well this account wasn't opened last week, but a few months ago.

But surely they cant' word it like this no matter how suspect their advertising?

Tell us exactly what it says so we can put it in context and not rely on your memory.

It is poorly worded. Plus should be replaced with, "including the", if the bonus is included, or "plus a" if the bonus is in addition to.

Nope. Can't see "plus" but can see "includes".

    Offers a rate of 3.17% AER/gross p.a. variable. This includes a 1.42% unconditional bonus paid until 31 October 2012
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

So no mention of the word "plus" anywhere then?

I would have been very suspicious of this since their is no way somebody is going to offer a rate of 4.6% EVEN for 1 year fixed rate. The account obviously wasn't a one-year fixed rate. Such an account would not have had a one-year bonus.

It might have helped if the OP had specified the name of the account.

Update: There was / is an account called WeBSave Plus perhaps that's where the confusion arose.

Guess it will be a salutory lesson to investigate things more carefully!

Think I will now transfer to another company for a better rate....
