Problems shutting down laptop

For the last couple of weeks it has taken several attempts to shut down my laptop. The last two days it has not shut down at all and I have just had to press the power button, which I know is not ideal. When I switch it on again it boots up as normal (ie no message comes up about not shutting down correctly), but I'm worried I am damaging my laptop. Can anyone make any suggestions to rectify this? Thanks in advance.

Pending browntoa's analysis, you can usually shut it down cleanly by going into task manager, and killing processes, explorer etc.. CTRL ATL DEL

Tried that but it didn't work unfortunately, but thanks for the suggestion.

I had the same problem on my laptop.

I ran chkdsk on the hard drive it picked up some bad sectors etc, corrected them and the problem was fixed.

you seem to have a lot of running processes from start up

C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe (can be started manually when you want to use skype)

C:\Program Files\Sophos\Remote Update\imonitor.exe (seems to be a remote virus updater for sophos but you use avast)

C:\Program Files\CASIO\Photo Loader\Plauto.exe (not required until you use the camera)

C:\Program Files\Philips\VOIP321\VOIP321.exe (used for skype I assume, could be started manually when required )

C:\Program Files\SMART Board Software\Aware.exe

and

C:\Program Files\SMART Board Software\SMARTBoardService.exe

and

C:\Program Files\SMART Board Software\Marker.exe (all for smart Board is an interactive whiteboard application that can be used over a LAN or the Internet, not required all the time )

C:\PROGRA~1\YAHOO!\MESSEN~1\ymsgr_tray.exe (yahoo messenger, start when needed)

anything interesting in start, run, eventvwr?

the more you switch it off without a shutdown, the more there is a risk of registry corruption, and bsod on startup, so if you have any important data on there, backup just in case.. see backup thread if you need info on backup
