Application accepted but balance xfer 'not at this time'?

Options
Hi all

I was pleased to finally be accepted for a 20 month 0% credit card with Barclaycard today (failed before due to issues with address) but a bit disappointed to be told that the balance transfer I'd requested was 'not possible at present'.

I applied for the card online (it was an offer with an impending deadline) so was not able to talk to an agent about what was happening re. the balance transfer. Instead, the onscreen message told me to call Barclaycard when I receive my card.

I am really gutted about this as it was one of the main reasons for applying for the card in the first place. Can anyone tell me if this is just something they need to talk to me about in more detail? I was wondering if perhaps being a Sunday, it simply couldn't be processed online.

Thanks all

  • Be prepared for the worst.

Barclaycard have a habit of accepting people for cards and shortly afterwards closing the account.

Of course it might not be that at all...

Right...OK. So what would they do that for? My credit rating's pretty much spotless, it's really just the balance transfer thing I'm feeling nervous about because I've not done one before and don't know why it couldn't be done at the same time.

What card are you trying to transfer from? I know some companies have difficulty processing BTs from store cards or Amex, so it could be that. Did you get a high enough credit limit to cover the BT amount?

That may be it then - it's a Debenhams credit (not store) card if that is likely to be a problem. I think it's basically a re-branded Santander card though isn't it?

I had about £700 to transfer, so I'm pretty sure the credit limit will be a fair bit higher. Not had that confirmed though yet...

Hmm, there shouldn't be a problem with that - it's generally only cards with numbers of lengths other than 16 digits which cause issues

I'm afraid it's only really Barclaycard who can help you at this point. It's worth giving them a call to find out more - at least finding out whether 'not possible at present' actually means 'not possible ever', or whether everything will be sorted out in a few days...
