Finding the owner of card off receipt details

Is it just the item and the card you have?
The OP refers to a "receipt for a debit card" not the card itself. This is unlikely to contain the complete card number. Assuming that the correct card issuer can be identified from the initial digits the bank would then have to search transactions using any information on the slip to identify the customer concerned.0 -

If the info on the receipt is given to the shops merchant bank it's a simple procedure for them to identify the full card details used. If the shop aren't willing to do this then if the OP writes to the bank concerned (using the info from the first 4 digits of the card) all they can hope for is that they will offer to help. Personally i think they will advise the OP to hand the item in to the police and let them deal with it. Seems like the most logical thing to do to me. Don't know what the OP's reasons are for not wanting to do this ?0 -

However, I'd be very concerned at the security of the retailer in producing a receipt that has all of the card details on it.
The majority of retailers these days should only have the last four digits of a card number actually printed on the receipt, with the rest of it made up of asterisks.
Unfortunately thats not always right... With a PDQ machine, the customers copy of the receipt has the card number starred out apart from the last four digits, however the merchant copy has ALL 16 digits printed on it.0 -

I got the impression they were running / part of a business and it was the business that wanted good publicity.
I see little wrong with that personally. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

The PDQ machine we have at work doesnt do that.
All asterisks except final 4 digits on both customer and merchant copy of the receipts.
Saying that it's probably wrong - our company name is spelt wrong on there too.0 -

Well I'm sure PDQ machines can be set to the specific company requirements... Our company must want all digits on our copy of the receipt :-)0
