Cheques issued in maiden name - will bank honour

I changed my name following marriage 5 years ago but sometimes I still get cheques in my maiden name.
I hypenated my name so there is some similarity there. when I cashed cheque last time I took my marriage cert to show them and the man was a bit reluctant to to take it? When I asked if there was a policy on how long after marriage they stop accepting the woman's maiden name he wouldn't answer. I suspect he didn't know.
But anyway my main question is does anyone know if there is some kind of law or some thing regarding this?

The best way forward would be to just ask the originator to make the cheque payable to your correct name.
Then advise anyone who has your maiden name on there files you have been married for the past 5 years.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
It will depend on the size of the cheque.
Small amounts say under £100 should not be a problem larger ones might.0 -

You changed your name using your marriage as the reason for soing so. There is no requirement in law for you to have changed your name.
I suggest you open a savings account in your maiden name. I still have one though I've been married over 30 years. It's not illegal to have an account in your maiden name even though you may normally be known by your husband's family name.0 -
How would you get through the ID verification today if all documents are in married name?LittleVoice wrote: »You changed your name using your marriage as the reason for soing so. There is no requirement in law for you to have changed your name.

The OP hasn't responded about whether it's possible to get the originator to use her correct name, it makes this matter a lot easier than faffing around opening new accounts and it's pointless to debate until we find this out.0

Yes. A cheque can only be paid into an account in the name of the payee. So 5 years is a long time to continue asking the Bank to put that to one side? Resolving the problem at source is the best way to deal with it - and obtain cheques that match your account details?
Can a cheque be paid into the account of someone other than the named payee?
Most cheques are crossed 'A/C payee' which means they can only be paid into the account of the named payee. The crossing cannot be deleted, nor can the cheque be transferred over to a third party. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
This cheque has already been sorted and hopefully it won't happen again.
I was just asking as a general question as IF the bank had refused what could I have done if getting the originator to reissue cheques in correct name wasn't a route I wanted to go through.
And as for opening another account, I'd be worried about the ID checks like jonesMUFCforever said. You'll have to speak up; I'm wearing a towel0 -
Banks officially shouldn't be taking cheques that have a different name in the payee section to what is on the account.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

I know but they should at least be able to make
some allowances if necessary.
That may be the case within the first few months not after 5 years.
