You can trace the size you want and leave the original pattern untouched. Place the tracing paper over the pattern and just draw round the size you want, not forgetting to copy over all the relevant markings for darts, and the notches too. You can buy dressmaker's tracing paper which is big sheets, or you could use a roll of greaseproof paper.

I do it differently - I just fold the pattern along the lines of the size I want - saves tracing and (for me) it's easier!

I have patterns I have used 20 plus times and have used all sizes, especially important for kids clothes. I cut the pieces to the biggest size and then iron under to the size I am using, you may have to snip a corner. I rarely transfer a pattern.

I have a little machine now. I've had it for a few months but aside from stitching pillow cases together to put pillows in for the dog's bed and then stitched round an old blanket for the cover and sewn a seam to thread my door curtain through I really lack the skill base to do a project.

I have some material that my daughter picked. It's been there for a good 6 weeks. I'm scared to even try something incase I ruin good fabric. I was thinking a little cushion for her bedroom with an envelope type enclosure but I do have a case of actually being afraid to try it for fear of failure I think.

I'm so keen but want to run before I can walk and unfortunately that is to my detriment. Ok, I'm going to try it out this evening. I'll let you know how I get on :)

Fuddle try some remakes from old clothes, cut an old dress down to a top, long jeans to cut-offs or shorts, cut kids t-shirts into little pants. All tutorials available on the internet. You can also make little girl dresses from old t-shirts and mens shirts. look around the house for things you are not going to wear any more and see what else you can make them into.

fuddle - if you are looking for a step by step for envelope cushions - pop to my homepage and look for a post on May 20th called "Simple cushion covers", they were a house-warming present for one of the Matrix ladies.

Few other ladies have made them too - so it might help.

Thank you MG :) I'm going to tackle it this afternoon.

gibson123 I have seen so many cool tutorials making bags etc from old clothes and jumpers. This kind of an idea appeals to me :D

    Edit:

I found the other curtain to my door curtain and decided to leave the nice fabric alone. MG I've used your wrap around tutorial and made a dog bed for the living room. I sewed two old flat worn cushions together and the curtain material cover.

I realise it's very uninspiring and boring but just wanted to show you what I've done and that with a tape measure and decent pair of scissors I will try again with a smaller cushion for DD's bed and who knows maybe some larger floor cushions. At least my dog will appreciate it. :)

Well done fuddle - you have been busy. The first cut is always the hardest - before you know it you will be ripping up fabric with gay abandon. Warning though - it gets addictive ............ look where my addiction has led me ......

fuddle that is a great first project! It's lovely that you made something your dog can enjoy too.

MG, I am in awe... that is an amazing quilt!

Edit: Oh dear, I went to your blog MG for the cushion tutorial... I fear I may now be lost in the land of peanut cookies and pistachio biscotti! Seriously, what a great blog, thank you!
