Best Credit card for daughter

Options
Hi all... long time lurker doing my first post.

Thought I would ask you knowledgeable people on here... Quicker than doing my own research! ha ha

My 19 year old daughter wants to get her first credit card to build up her credit history. She is in full time employment and would pay the card off in full every month.

Could anyone advise me of the best credit card for her to apply for? Many Thanks

The answer to this frequently asked question is always the same. In the following order:

    1. The bank that receives her salary, and if they say no...

    2. Capital One Classic, Barclays Initial, Aqua, or Vanquis.
  • I would say her bank as they normally 'pre-approve' their account customers.

    Natwest offered me nothing,

Barclaycard offered me one as I wasnt eligible for an overdraft with Barclays (although I'd only been with them about a month). So try the bank first for sure.

Personally I would recommend Barclaycard, their on line banking is first class. There is the facility to make your own categories for spending. You can for example have a category and name it fuel so that you can see how much you have spent on fuel and view the information in a pie chart. This also tells you what percentage of your bill was spent on each category.

Also you can set up email and or texts alerts so that when you spend a certain amount you are advised of this. Furthermore you can also be notified when your statement is ready and also five days before your payment deadline. You can pay your bill via the website, also if you choose to pay from your bank they can notify you when your payment has been received.

You do not need to be a Barclays customer to have a Barclaycard. The interest rates are comparatively high but if you clear the balance in full each month this is inconsequential. All the best.
