Camera help

Options
Not too sure if I'm posting this in the right forum, I want to buy a new camera, I have around 500~ 750 pounds to spend, I've been told that cannon is a good make to buy. I just want a simple one which has a good zoom lens & takes high quality pics, I'm not very techie, so the simpler the better.

Any tips are much appreciated, thanks guys :j

  • If you are not very technically minded, buying a £700 camera will not guarantee you "high quality pictures" - DSLRs are feature packed and although they will run in auto modes, a cheaper camera will get you just as good a result. Unless you really want to learn photography you'd be better off with something like this...

MY OH's dad has an expensive camera and TBH his photos are carp because he hasn't a clue what he's doing (a "just keeping up with the Jones" purchase!) - The pics I take on my iphone are better than his - no joke!!!

If you want something with more flexibility in future, you might also consider the Panasonic DMC-FZ45 or DMC-FZ48. These are still only half the budget, but have a massive zoom (24x, which might cause you to need a tripod, even though it has IS) and lots of advanced features if you don't want to leave it in Auto mode.

    I second fwor's choices. Excellent point-shoot cameras.

£60-100 ones come with zoom lenses and are capable of high quality pics

  • To be honest , have you got a camera already? Since you are "not very techie" borrow one for a couple of hours from a friend see how you get on with it, ask her/him questions, I have a £100 small olympus which takes great pics (in the OH's hands ;)) and a DSLR which takes terrible pics in my Hands but they are technically well exposed , focused, white balance is perfect but my portraits all come out from the neck down, I never could look girls in the eyes.

  • dSLR are the best sort of camera you can buy and can massively exceed your budget just for the body of the camera. That said to get the most out of them you really do need to get into the technical side of photography and accept that the £750 budget is going to the start of your expenditure as you will want to add further lenses, flash, remote release etc etc as time goes on.

If you really just want to stay in the world of point and shoot you are much better off going for a bridge camera. The Panasonic DMC-FZ range are probably the best at this and even the flagship model of the DMC-FZ150 can be bought online from a reasonable company under £400 but the FZ48 at £270 is most likely more than enough.

None of these cameras are pocket friendly, you could probably spend a bit more on something you can put in your pocket but you will have to sacrifice both zoom and image quality despite spending more.
  • I would recommend looking at the entry level Nikon dslr (or canon). I have a Nikon d3000 and love it, my photo skills have really come on in the last couple of years and I'm now saving for a tamarin 18-270mm lens. I also keep a Panasonic dmc tz25 compact (or something) for quick shots, from my experience most cameras can take really good photos but even the really expensive pro cameras in the wrong hands can take shocking pics.

    cheers
