Right - well just stick with the SO for those few months? As the problem with them is you need to adjust for the fact that - FP or not - they don't do weekends or Bank Holidays.

So just set the SO - with some suitable adjustment to the date - for the few months you're out of the country. Then kill it off and revert to bill payments the rest of the time. As, that way, you limit the time the money languishes in the FD account?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Yes, that is the conclusion I have come to.

Retrograde step that SOs no longer go at weekends.

Time these banks moved into the 21st century!

Sos have never been processed at weekend s, other than internal ones.

Yes, but even those are no longer going on weekends. Nearly messed up my £1000 going round our Reward accounts. Far too complicated to sort it to cover all eventualities so am now doing it manually.

When you are abroad you could always phone them on +44 1132 422 229 from outside the UK and get them to do it.

    Still whatever easier for you.

I guess your landlady also banks with HSBC, since until a week or two ago their Standing Order FP limit was a miserable £50.
Not true. We were with HSBC up till April '11 and the rent (over 1k) was always paid by SO and reached my landlady same day by FP.

So...is our landlady getting our rent 3 days early then? :undecided

I think I will have to set up SOs for the months we are away, phoning Halifax from abroad at 37ppm does not appeal!

You can ask her, and if she is then adjust your SO?

Depends where you're going, you could get a local SIM. For example, it's cheaper to call the UK from Hong Kong than from the UK.

Just touring in Europe, probably in 5 countries, so will stick with our "international" SIM.......think it is an Estonian number. Great for receiving calls from home as no charge to receive, not too bad for making calls (as long as not to HMRC or bank!), and credit never expires.

For texts home we used O2 this year as only 10p per text and free to receive.

The best deal changes each year so we always check. Thankfully roaming prices are decreasing these days.
