Pet First Aid Kit - what would you put in it

I have been thinking of putting together a first aid kit for my dogs and cat. Anyone have any suggestions for products and places to buy them cheap as possible of course!

  • Mine has some pretty human things in as well as tubes of stuff I've had for various ailments (eta for them, not me!) that are still in date and may be needed again.

Have just dug it out (sits on the sideboard so can't get it confused with the human one lol):

Just realised I need to clear this out and remove the dog stuff... will see if there's anything that I could pass onto the local rescue

    Dressing pads & Micropore
    Paw protection boots (dog)
    Wormer tablets
    Flea treatments
Syringes (for liquid medication - not ones with needles!)
    Vet skin cream
    Wound powder
    Bandage
Fuciderm gel (one of the cat's sometimes gets a skin conditions)
Katalax (same cat sometimes gets constipated)
    Sudacrem
Ear drops & ear cleaner (dog & cat)
    2 mouse traps ?????

Things like bandages, wound dressings etc, I just buy in the chemist / £shop etc
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

I would also add a tick removal device.

I've got a few bits I keep just incase, off the top off my head
    - guaze pads and bandages
    - Vetwrap, this is a bandage that sticks to itself but not their fur
    - Piriton tablets for allergic reactions (not Piriteze)
    - Infacol, to be given at the first signs of bloat (not as a cure but to buy some time to get to a vet)
    - tweezers
    - tick tweezers
    - Hibiscrub to clean wounds
    - Purple Spray (antibacterial spray)
    - Calendula ointment, meant to speed up healing, seemed to help when one of mine ripped his nail off
    - Dog boots that fit both dogs on their front and back paws
    - Babywipes

I have a human firstaid kid in my car that would do in emergencies but do keep meaning to sew a bag I can put all the above in, and other essentials, to keep in the house but grab and take with me anywhere I go with the dogs. Would have water and emergency food in there as well as spare collars and leads, and have it somewhere easy to grab if we had to get out of the house in an emergency too.

Some other things I may collect over time
    - individual little pots/bottles of sterilised water (can find huge bottles for washing eyes out but as they have to be binned after use they seem a waste, want little bottles instead)
    - Rescue Remedy, herbal tincture that's meant to help calm stressed dogs
    - a towel/blanket that could work to tie around large wounds or use as a sling to carry a collapsed dog

Lots of the stuff I have is made for humans and came from ChemistDirect at good prices.

Mine has just wound powder and dressings. Thanks to once removing 64 ticks for a little Greyhound I now have 'the knack' and no longer need a tick remover... but they are handy little gizmos.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

I do have one of those kicking around somewhere .... and claw clippers.

This is my problem, I use things and don't put them back where they belong!

Also missing is the flea comb!

Off to hunt for them in a minute while I remember!

  • Definately rescue rememdy, used it on horses, dogs, humans and even rats:D
Light travels faster than sound - that's why you can see someone who looks bright until they open their mouth.
  • Ours just consists of cotton wool, Hibiscrub and a pair of vets dressing scissors reccomended by a vet for trimming fur from around a wound http://vce-uk.com/epages/eshop409335.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eshop409335/Products/INS114
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say
    I saved my money

    Dignity, Deacon Blue
  • I would include Piriton for stings/bites too.

Also the number of the local 24 hr vet! We have listed for home and the 3 places we most commonly go to on holiday!
    NOT a NEWBIE!

    Was Greenmoneysaver. . .
