New driver - 6 months insurance?

Hi, my 21 year old son passed his driving test today, first time :j
I have been trying to find him insurance and now my head is spinning
I have had a quote from Zurich, for 6 months insurance with accelerated bonus scheme, which I am told means that after 6 months he will have "earned" 2 years no claims bonus. He was going to go fully comp, but the operator advised that as the car is only worth approximately £1000 he might be better going third part fire and theft, with a £100 excess on fire and theft only, none on third party. This is provided he takes the Pass Plus course, which he is starting tonight (great uncle is a driving instructor).
The car is a 1997 P reg Peugeot and will be kept on the street at night. He works in a school and there is secure(ish) parking. The quote was £675 for 6 months.
Does this sound good? Will there be any catches, such as having to pay thousands in the latter 6 months? Neither my husband or myself are drivers - they won't let me pass my test
Also, the car is currently in his 17 year old sisters name; she is having lessons also, but may take quite a few:rotfl: more than him. I have obtained the quote for now as if he is the owner, we can easily transfer the car into his name, until she passes her test (then let war begin:eek: ). Does it make a difference if the car is still in her name, would it be more expensive if it stays in her name, but he insures it?
Thanks for any advice.
Best wishes
Carol

2 years no claims for only paying for 6 months sounds a bit too good to be true. I've heard of accelarated bonuses but they are normally for 10 months and after that 10 months you get 1 yrs no claim bonus. I'd try the insurers through quidco who are doing some great cashback deals at the moment.:j Egypt 10th May - Here we come!!!:j0

On the question of car ownership, I think that to have a policy in your own name you need to be the "registered keeper" of the car (or at least that's what I was told when I got my first few policies!).
I don't profess to be an insurance expert, but would adding an older driver help premiums? I've heard that it can reduce premiums (when my wife was learning to drive I added her on as a named driver, and there was no increase!)0 -
As above post says! however insures the car must be the registered owner and keep. Now that is because there must be insuarble interest - Meaning the policy holder woould suffer a finicial loss if the car was stolen for example.
Ways to get the price down, Keep the car on driveway if possible, check the actaul milage you will do, add a older driver, Pay for the policy in full, and check see what cash back you can get of reward sites. such as https://www.quidco.co.ukIf I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0 -

I would query if the 2 years Zurich say your son will have earned are recognised by other ins co's incase he changes co in the future. I have a feeling its like the direct line sweetner where named drivers earn their own NCD but these aren't recognised by other ins co's so if you move co's they are invalid.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
These sorts of schemes are generally a way of tying you into the insurer as only they recognise the non-standard NCD that they award - many are getting clever now and making it clear on their letters that the NCD is a promotion and not normally accrued
Most insurers will allow someone other than the owner/ registered keeper be the policyholder... the difference is obviously that if the vehicle is a total loss then payment would normally go to the owner rather than the policyholder - cars on HP are the most common examples but I borrowed a friends car for a few months and had no issues insuring it in my nameAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Thanks everybody for your replies. I have since tried "moneysupermarket.com" again for TPFT (was looking at fully comp at first until a broker suggested TPFT as the car is only worth about £1000) and got a quote for £1469 for the year with legal cover. There was no scope to add that he had taken PassPlus (had his first 2 hour lesson last night and will complete the rest over the weekend). I 'phoned them just to see how much taking off legal cover, and the fact that he was doing his PassPlus course, would reduce it and was quoted £1069 !!!:j Big difference. He was going to pay monthly, but now as I have learned a "few" tips from this board, he has applied for a O% interest credit card and is going to pay up front and make sure he makes the payments back to his card each month (he better had!!!). The insurance Company is NIG, would I be able to do the Quidco thing?? Don't know anything about it but he has registered just in case.
Nb: Not being a driver myself I don't have a clue, so can somebody advise me?
The car is currently on my sisters drive, as I don't have one. It has a valid VORN, the MOT has run out. Which order do we do things in? i.e. Have it MOT'd first (but are we allowed to have it driven without tax, MOT, insurance?). Insure it first? Tax it first (can we do this without MOT or insurance?). Think I need a step by step guide as to what to do!!
Thanks and best wishes

The order to do things is, insure it first, then get it MOT'd then tax it last. You can't tax it without MOT cert and insurance docs. Don't know how you would get it to MOT place without tax though:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

Insurance first, no exemptions for no insurance whatsoever, however, there is for no MOT. You must ring and book an appointment, a specific time with an MOT testing station, it is all computerised nowerdays and it must be a confirmed appointment, not, "bring it along mate some time tomorrow".
This will then allow you in law to drive a motor vehicle on a road without a current mot and if it fails you will be allowed to take it home or to a garage for repairs. You cannot drive it elsewhere.
Once it has an MOT you must then tax it from the first day of that month, and ensure the day you took it for MOT was covered in that month.0 -

I understand the bit about having an appt to drive it to the MOT but does that cover you for not having tax either? I have a feeling it won't but without the MOT you can't get tax......swings and roundabouts.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. No, it's fine as long as you're en route to the pre-booked appointment. But really there are no exceptions to that.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008 :beer:0
