New laptop - you decide!

Options
Seen an Acer and a Samsung, not much between them

£550

£500

I do have another thread where I've looked into Dell laptops too, Inspiron 15R and XPS 15, with similar specs.

Which one would you pick?

definitely the Samsung, better build quality according to reports. Spec wise they're basically the same though. So even at £50 cheaper you're winning

I am very tempted by the Samsung, any further comments?

Final decision must be made today!
  • Argos have an excellent deal on HP laptops - my 3 year old Dell Inspiron packed up on me yesterday and after looking at what PCWorld 100 day sale had to offer, I eventually settled on an HP G72 laptop from Argos - it was only £379 and really worth the price, I thought, with 4GB ram, 500GB HDD and a large 17" screenel Core i3 processor, Win 7 Premium, Int. Wireless and bluetooth and webcam as well.

My other option was the Sonly Vaio, but at £700 this was a huge price variance and not essential at this stage.

I just bought the acer 5750 and think its well made with a good keyboard. The thing that made me decide on an acer was the extended warranty you can get for 3 years including accidental damage for £30

I`ve had an Acer for 3 years ( 5920) I have had the charging socket repaired 3 times so I dont know if this is an issue with Acers or just my model

Any owners or anyone with experience of Samsung laptops and how they compare to other brands?

I had (still have) a venerable Samsung X05 which lasted without any issues for about 6 years - I remember it being quite a pricey buy at the time from a shopping channel, it came with extra battery, had a brilliant battery life, useful software included, even a decent laptop case and a USB floppy drive as the floppy was just on its way out at the time. It was a well made, lightweight laptop which was really well specced for the time and I maxed the memory out a year or two down the line. Mine was well used and never had a moments problem with it until it starting just losing power for no apparent reason, buying a new adapter didn't help and it seems it may be a motherboard capacitor issue (expensive and difficult to fix unless in specialist workshop). I would buy a Samsung again - it was a great laptop. Its still here as I can't bear to throw it out yet. They are expensive, though, and don't seem to have reduced in price by the same percentage as other manufacturers over the years.

Also in my laptop graveyard, is an Acer - 12 years old, built like a tank, running Windows Millenium :), its still chugging along. It also had that 3 year international warranty, not that I ever had to claim on it. It cost about £1500 at that time :) Times change as does build quality though, and some models from just about every big manufacturer have had excellent reviews, others have had problems.
