  • it is the same as amount stated in my contract. I had a mortgage with Abbey and the Exit fee stated was £225. I have recently moved house which meant paying off the old Abbey mortgage and taking out a new one - still with the Abbey and I paid the £225...is it possible to claim this back when the amount paid matches the amount on the contract?

    Thanks :-)

Doesn't work like that. This is all about lenders charging more than the figure that you agreed to pay. You had implicitly agreed to pay £225 when you set up your mortgage, so you can hardly complain when they charged you that figure.

I think it's a bit rich that they charged it regardless of the fact that you went back to them for your next mortgage, but in the eyes of the FSA, there's nothing wrong with them doing that.
Everyone needs something to believe in.

I believe I need another beer.
  • THANKS MARTIN AND TEAM. rang halifax on fsa regulation (option 2)to enquire about my exit fee last july. after going through the security questions etc, he simply told me : my exit fee quoted at the start was £75, you recently paid £175, we'll refund you £100 within 28 days. Obviously they are guilty but why can't they just pay everyone instead of waiting for us to ring them. THANKS AGAIN.

    Hi,

Just wanted to say that it could be worth calling even if you redeemed your mortgage a while ago. I took out a mortgage with The Leeds PBS in March 1993 and redeemed it from Halifax plc in December 2000. I was charged £75 when it should have been £40, and a cheque for £35 is headed my way within 28 days. Cost: a 5 minute phone call to 0845 1203033, open 8am to 8pm.
  • I recently changed my mortgage with the C&G and was charged £220.00 as a 'closing aministration charge' but remained with them and took out a diffrent mortgage. Have I been overcharged in this case?

Because many people who have redeemed their mortgages have done so because they've moved house, and they probably haven't given their ex-lender their new address.

The lenders are not obliged to make contact for possible refunds. It's for the customers to make the claim.
Well done to all who have been successful...Don't forget to claim intrest.
  • I've sent off a letter to the Halifax asking for confirmation of fee's stated and actually charged for or two mortgages in the last five years. Let's see what happens now.

I just received a cheque for £35 from the halifax after a phone call last week.
This was the difference between £45 quoted and £75 paid
I'm now waiting on some larger amounts from Natwest and Abbey who I've written to.

  • I'm a new user so please excuse any mistakes

I phoned the Halifax this morning, I had my exit paperwork stating I was charged £75.00 but did not have the original. On phoning they said that my original mortgage in 2000 would have quoted £75 so not owed anything, on reading some of the threads someone has said that in 2000 the fee was £50 and this increased to £75 in 2001, does anyone now this to be true. If so i could be owed £25

    any replies greatfully received
  • It was me that said that - and yes it is correct AFAIK.

    Halifax told me that.

I don't know which MONTH in the year their charges were raised - but my mortgage was from Feb 2000 - to Aug 2001.
