Life Insurance with profits?

I have just received a cheque from the CIS after a life insurance policy on my husbands life for the benefit of my child, the basic sum assured was £4000, over 17 years.
My question is that the cheque received was less than all the premiums paid, is this correct?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Quite probably. It depends on how much went towards life assurance and how much went towards with profits. One with minimal life assurance as the sum assured will pay out more than one with a greater sum assured.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
