At the end of the day - download a live cd and give it a go. If you don't like it try BSD or Mac OS or Windows.
It really is a personal choice.0 -
I've dabbled in linux over the last 10 years or so , but always found myself switching back to Windows for varying reasons. Not because windows is better per se , but because it does what I need it to
I've got far more important things to do than change OS just for the sake of it.

I spend my working life on Unix and Linux servers and to be honest I still prefer windows at home, the other thing is that at school the children use windows so it avoids confusion.
I do have my home PC set to dual boot with Ubuntu but I rarely use it and when i do I find the GUI too hard to do anything in so I always end up using the command prompt. But that's probably because I'm so used to it from work. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

been on linux for close to a decade, gentoo for over 4.
if you want an easy point and click distro which does everything out the box then suse, if you want to understand whats actually going on i recomend the gentoo install at least once its a great learning exercise and not that hard any more.0 -

Briefly. I have it on a live CD. Its ok, but as it was v1.0 and didnt appear to have any outstanding advantages, I didnt persue it.
Ive just checked thie site, and its still on v1.0. I guess its not very 'active'?"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
I believe freespire is the free community version of linspire (which isn't 100% free (beer and speech)).
They claim that linspire is the easiest linux desktop to use, but I haven't tried it so don't know.
Version 2.0 alpha is released. And I know that linspire is very active.0 -
just wanted to add to this thread.
I switched from XP to a 100% ubuntu install (look mum, no microsoft) last week.
I can use it and I am not very techy. My kids use it including my 5 yr old. It just worked. So I stayed. I had one problem in that it took me a while to figure out how to get it to recognise my second hard drive, however through ubuntu forums I was able to sort this out.
I love it. I even play a windows version of some poker software using wine (you can use it to play WoW too) and, well it really does just work.
I love the whole idea of community based software rather than corperation based software. Anyone can help out and I have already distributed a few CDs of it to friends telling them they can always use it if windows breaks down.
I want to stay away from writing guides, there is just so many that it does end up confusing sometimes, I might find a project that I can beta test once I have found my feet a bit more. Download it if you can.0
