Lots of the banks have been doing this. Your not the first person I've seen this happen to.0

put in a claim for ppi today, go out this afternoon to max out the credit card,+
Why did you want to max out the credit card?
Did you hope that the PPI claim would pay the purchases off?
PPI is insurance to cover your repayments if you can't, due to unemployment or sickness. If you tell your card company that have lost income because of one of those factors, they would be very irresponsible to allow you to spend even more, wouldn't they?We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

now been passed on to the department responsible for fobbing off, still waiting for the letter to arrive to inform me that credit limit was reduced (according to terms + conditions supposed to be informed BEFORE the rate is reduced ) full access to online account now restored...............the saga continues0 -

maybe the original post did not explain my problem too clearly so here goes...... as I said I had the credit limit on my card reduced, no problem with that, the problem is with the fact that I wasn't notified by any means that this had happened causing me to exceed the credit limit when I next used my card. I also tried to access my account online the same day + was unable to view any information so could not see what my new limit was although this has returned over the last few days . The reason for my original post was to see if anyone had any advise on the best way to approach the bank to resolve this. I have since had contact with the bank + they have sent a letter in full + final settlement.
Thanks
p.s I have also turned down the small financial sum they offered for the inconvenience as this was never about the money0 -
...the problem is with the fact that I wasn't notified by any means that this had happened causing me to exceed the credit limit when I next used my card.
It's not as shady as you're making it. Just see the conflict in the facts:
- the banks will only want to reduce the limit of a customer *when* they are a higher risk of never ever paying it back (not because *you* are, but you are *now*)
- no customer should have any additional charges for using the card up to the credit limit
- the customer should be notified of any changes to their detriment
In these circumstances (perhaps only in these?) it's an accepted practice to simply ask for forgiveness than get permission. If the bank would give ample notice, any affected customer would use their last chance to get some final shopping before the dark days, which would make it much more difficult to pay it all back, and would increase the costs of other customers as well.
The only catch is, to stay fair, they should revert any charges because of the unknown-so-far credit limit decrease.
You're right to be suspicious, perhaps the bank really knew something about your circumstances. But this is hardly unusual, they can do that from their monthly feed of credit data. Maybe you were already paying minimum for several other cards, or maxed out your overdraft already, maybe withdrew cash on more cards.
If the bank can produce proof that it was about to send you notice, or that they tried to contact you in any other way, even if after the fact, they won't be caught red-handed, but you should get the charges removed for exceeding the new credit limit that you didn't knew about.p.s I have also turned down the small financial sum they offered for the inconvenience as this was never about the money
Well, on top of charges removed, this might be a nice offer. In the end all they can give is money, they can't go back to the shop with you to apologise about declining the card, can't they?Enjoy the silence...0 -

Did you not read the original post or my reply in full before you started ranting?
The original post said:put in a claim for ppi today, go out this afternoon to max out the credit card
This suggested to me that the poster knew he would be unable to pay the bill for some reason, but expected the PPI insurers to pay it off, so rather than do the honest thing and only spend what he knew he could afford, he wanted to get as much benefit as possible knowing that someone else would pay.
I asked in order to clarify whether that was the position or not. That's a perfectly reasonable question to ask given the original post.
If it's true, it shows the poster to have very low moral standards.
If not, the poster had the opportunity to explain why he posted what he did.
So, deadthings, come back when you've calmed down.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
