Monitor problem

Has anyone ever come across malware which might make the monitor picture look as if it was vibrating? This happened to me whilst in the middle of browsing unfamiliar sites. I'm suspicious I might have picked something up and am doing all the appropriate checks before trying another monitor on the PC. It would be helpful to know if there's anything out there I should be looking for.

I've been a PC user since 1997 and have never seen this before but there's always something new lol.

  • Hello,

just had a look for something about this and found:

"Might want to check your refresh rates as well. Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Monitor. Raise the refresh rate a little and see if that helps. If you still have the monitor's manual, look through it and make sure you use a refresh rate that's safe for the monitor. The wrong refresh rate CAN damage it."

It does sound to me its more of a monitor problem than a virus problem. Reminds me of the old refresh buttons on the old monitors which reset the magnets.

    Hope this helps :)

Tried refresh rates. Went up in stages but had no result except a washout effect on the screen. I'm going to drag out my spare monitor.

Spare monitor fitted - result the same. Back to the larger monitor now. Next step will be a system restore. Once Malawarebytes has fininished its scan. Spybot Search and Destroy found incidences of "Doubleclick" and nothing more.

I should say at this juncture, I have checked the system hardware and no faults are showing up anywhere, not even unrelated ones.

System restore unsuccesful. MAnufacturers website next to see if there is a test for the onboard graphics card or new drivers.

    New drivers installed.
    Card uninstalled and reinstalled.
Windows reregistered (came up while I was rebooting)

No change. Any ideas anyone? My next attempt will be to do a windows repair from an original disc.
  • No, don't do that I would say it's your graphics card need replacing or perhaps it as a fan installed on your graphics card and that is causing it to over heat owing to the fan as stopped working or perhaps needs a cleaning.

That's worth checking. The machine was opened this week to fit a new USB2 card. I may have allowed a fan to become blocked.

I haven't opened the machine yet but am, noticing that the problem seems to have stablilised itself into a shadow underneath and to the right of all type and icons.
  • In that case what I would do is give your machine a good work out, make the graphic card work hard and see if the problem returns.

Prize for idiot of the year goes to me. I failed to carry out the most basic of checks on this problem and it was only when going to dismantle the machine to check its innards that I found the D Type monitor cable was loose in its PC socket. Tighten up socket and hey presto, the problem is gone.

There's a lesson in there for all of us - especially me.
