Quitting job after 4 weeks

I'm at university and started working at a bingo hall 4 weeks ago. I hate the job and the staff and it's getting me down, so I think it's time to leave.

Even though I hate the job and am not too keen on the staff, I feel extremely bad about starting a job and leaving a few weeks later and can't push myself to hand in my notice tonight!

Any words of wisdom? Also, there was no stated notice period, so how much should I give them?

I'd offer one bit of advice, don't feel bad about it because you can be as damn sure as mustard that they wouldn't if getting rid of you.
  • Would imagine they would only need a weeks notice if that

Really if you are sure it is not the job for you and you are as unmotivated as you sound it's far better to cut your losses and quit. It gives the business a chance to find someone who does want the job and will likely do it better as we all do things we enjoy better than things we do resentfully.
A week's written notice would be adequate-although they may just tell you not to bother coming back.

(However I'm at a loss how bad a part-time job in a bingo hall can be -you go in work your hours and get out -surely if you're a student you're doing it to help support yourself-not for the next forty years. Means to an end.)

If you had worked there for a month by the time you handed in your notice you would need to give notice of one week.

If you handed in your notice before working there one calendar month it could be with immediate effect.

Notice? Just leave that simple... would never give them a 'notice' if that's how bad they are.

  • I think the statutory is....

under 1 month - no notice.
    1 - 3 months - 1 week.
3 months or over - 1 calender month.

In the absence of a contract term requiring more, the law is:

    from employee -
under one month's service - no notice
employed for one month or more (even 20+ years) - one week

    from employer -
under one month's service - no notice
employed for one month up to two years - one week
two years or more - one week for each complete year of employment (up to a maximum of 12 weeks)
