Certainly not. I only ever bluff when negotiating settlements. Banks, credit card companies, loan companies, mortgage brokers, financial advisers - that is just five of the sorts of people who can hold this information and who have on their small print "any information provided by you is shared for the purposes of fraud prevention etc etc". And who exactly do you think they share this information with? That would be Experian. People provide all sorts of information routinely and without thinking to a myriad of people that they want things from - and that information is routinely shared and much of it can still be shared even if you opt out of them sharing it, because the cleverly manipulate, quite lawfully, the terms of the DPA. Experian is one of the largest holders of personal information, and the extent of that information is astonishing - and it includes the ability to check and assess employment records. Employment checking has been a routine service for Experian and others for two decades at least - if they cannot actually confirm that an employment record is accurate how on earth do you think they make so much money on such things - or in fact frequently tell employers that someones CV is not correct?

Sort of - but this is not a credit report, this is about other information they have. And that is somewhat more difficult to access as I understand it. The reason I know all of this information is because a couple of years ago I got a threatening letter from my council saying that I was defrauding the council tax by claiming the single persons discount when in fact I was living with someone (God knows who - I checked under the beds and in the wardrobes, and didn't find them). It turned out to be a screw up (which affacted many hundreds of people) - the Council had retained Experian to check their council tax records against other records (employment, residence etc) held by Experian, but due to some error that data was run incorrectly. But needless to say that I did not appreciate being accused of fraud by the Council and unlike little old people and others who may have been frightened silly by what what an offocious and nasty letter, I wasn't in the slightest bit intimidated and just the wrong type of person to annoy.

But the upshot of this was that I never got to the bottom of how to access the entire amount of information Experian held, or even how they could hold it without, apparently, me knowing about it or being able to obtain copies of it. Most of my information came from the council after cringing public apologies for the screw up - and it was a shock to discover just how much data Experian had. I would be just as interested as everyone else to know how they do it or why we don't know about it. Although I suppose they will be along any minute now to deny it.
  • Is there any scope for FOI or DPA request for information - or does this only apply to public bodies?

Im still not 100% convinced they can find out everywhere you have worked if you dont disclose some places.I think they can contact the companies you put down and thats about it. How can they find out where someone worked 30 years ago when the company has now shut down and they dont put it down?
I know a lot of people who have blagged it for high level jobs and have got away with it.
If they are that good, how come people still get away with it?
Also which jobs do Experian do checks for-I've never been checked by them? is it banks and financial jobs?
  • Know its a bit late now but next time you do a cv put in years and not months. This allows for some license.

Sorry dear that wasnt me, it was a different person, different age range, different job type etc. I've never worked in HR, or for the post office or thrown a drink over someone.
You are wrong, totally wrong yet again. Sorry if the truth isnt convienient for you, sorry if someone has a different opinion to you but it happens. People get away with lying all the time- you might not like to believe it but they do!
I bet you a years wages, you are wrong.

Course it wasn't. Some people here have longer meories than yours though. Although yours seems pretty good - you know exactly who I was talking about and I never even dropped a hint! And you didn't work for the post office either.
