is it a router problem? cant access some websites

Options
hi,
i am having problems connecting to certain websites on both mine and dd laptops and am not sure if its a router problem?

bit of background - had problems with my phone line for years and numerous arguments with BT so got rid of the phone line, however have a super douper neighbour who also wanted wireless so i bought a router and she has it in her house - all is great....

however neighbour changed from bt to talktalk and then the internet decided not to work -after a lot of hassle and her kind cousin we managed to get the internet working again (albeit unprotected eek) anyway, since then i have not been able to access some sites such as paypal or my online bankin:eek:

as it is affecting both mine and dd laptops and one is vista and one windows 7 i am presuming that there is something wrong with the router?

my neighbour though can access these sites on her desktop??

any help gratefully received as it is starting to become a problem now

many thanks

It could be that the router is [for some reason] configured to block https requests over wireless

You'll probably need to log into its setup pages to check the wireless settings and correct if needed - you need to be hard wired in to do this [not wireless]
Or possibly do a reset on it - I'd first try a soft reset where you simply unplug it for a few seconds
a full factory reset usually requires you to hold a button in or a sequence of buttons.
If you have the manual, it should tell you how to perform a factory reset, if not, Google should oblige

I suspect you'll need to do the setup though
  • thats great thanks. we have previously tried reset numerous times so think the nice cousin will have to be called on again, both me and neighbour do the girly thing and get very confused when it comes to technical things, we couldnt even set it up when we got it in the first place!

If you cant get on some websites it sounds like DNS issue.

try setting router to custom dns server i.e OpenDNS
