What a lovely dress.... how clever you are! If i could make something half as decent as that i would be over the moon. The nearest i got to creating something was knitting a cardigan for my unborn child... by the time i finished it, she was born and had outgrown it. The buttons were pretty though :-(.

Incidently, my ex husband made all my maternity clothes. I gave birth to 3 children in 3 and a half years with him and i went through a lot of maternity clothes. The remnants he made dungarees with for my middle child. My present husband though he doesnt have the patience these days can turn his hand to anything with a sewing machine..... i must pick my men wisely... either that or they like to look after me.

I've just finished making 30 pairs of trousers for DS2 (who is three)

    Current size - 5 pairs
Size 3 -4 eight pairs plus shorts
Size 4-5 eight pairs plus shorts
    Size 5 -6 eight pairs

All of these were made from cast off trousers from my Dad or the hubbie of an old dear around the corner or from buying Next / M&S / GAP trousers from the pound rack in the local charity shop.

30 pairs of trousers and nine pairs of shorts for £12 so far.

Now I have a pile of twenty men's shirts to turn into shirts for the wee man.

PJs have been made from a King-sized flannel sheet I got for a pound and I dyed bright red.Using the same trousers and shirt pattern.

Nothing I have made is too difficult - but it has saved me loads.

I am currently stashing fabric to make a capsule wardrobe fro when I need to be "Out" to work as opposed to be working from home.

WOWSA that sounds great :D:D I never thought of doing stuff like that!

I wish I could sew! I am slightly scared of the sewing machine!

Is it possible to teach yourself to sew and make clothes? There aren't any classes around here!

Also do you need one of those dressmaker's dummies as I don't have space for one?

Angel look on You Tube for tutorials. I would say you don't need a dressmakers dummy at all.

I've just started a new thread called The Sewing Annexe for all us sewers to chat and support each other if you'd like to join.

Jenny: You don't need to go to a class no, I went because I hadn't the foggyest idea where to even start. But I imagine it is just as easy to learn from online tutorials!

I didn't need a dress makers dummy but I did get tired of trying it on a million times to get it right lol it's harder but not un-manageable :)

thanks for all your lovely comments x

Have a look in every charity shop you pass for any likely book titles. Readers Digest ones are brilliant for all the various techniques, they do a general needlecraft one and a dressmaking one. And the library of course, get out 2 or 3 at a time, some have patterns in as well.
I haven't been to any courses and don't have a dummy, not necessary definitely.
And look out for any material that's cheap and will do for practising on. Duvets and curtains from charity shops are often really good value and will be plenty for a top, skirt or cushion cover etc.
  • Will go for a hunt around the charity shops! I would love to be able to make the 50s style clothes and hand sewn gifts that I have all these ideas for!

It's a lovely dress and you look lovely in it as well. Well done.
I used to make my own clothes at school, in the 60's, but haven't made any for ages. I might have a go now.
