Just popped in to really say to Gardenia and Byatt and in fact anyone else who is prone to the blues, depression or whatever its called nowadays that I too suffer from time to time. Only my family really understand but none of my friends get it so I keep it to myself. (Or maybe they do and keep it to themselves too).
Just wanted to say I have used St John's Wort and it works for me.
I woke the other day feeling miserable with a whole day in front of me which seemed like a desert looming. I said to myself " OK. What are you gonna to do today? You are the main actor on your stage and so what part are you going to play and do you want to play it well?" I don't know where it came from but it made a positive difference to the day.
Hope you feel good today. x

I quite like quinoa but have never had it for breakfast. Usually have it with spicy chicken and roasted veg. First time I served it my two DDs looked at it very dubiously but really liked it - it's just that (in their words - not mine!!) it looks like Jeremy Clarkson's hair.

How did you serve the quinoa when you had it for breakfast. I can't picture it with milk and sugar like porridge (sorry Mardatha, just look away)

LOL I had to google what Clarkson's hair looks like - I couldn't visualise!

I looked on the internet for ideas for using it as a cereal...several of the sites cook it with a nut milk instead of part of the water, but I cooked it in water, and topped it up with a bit of ordinary milk as it got more cooked (thought it would catch otherwise). None of the sites I looked at had it with milk poured over, although one mentioned you could do that if you wanted.

I dribbled maple syrup over it and tried to forget my local food ethics. Quinoa from Bolivia  Maple Syrup from Canada

It's quarter to one...and wearing off by the way!!!

  • hi all

Just popped in to say my friend just cooks flaked quinoa with porridge oats in the microwave-about halfnhalf but as far as I know she has it with soya milk as she doesn't do much dairy. I have tried it too and it's quite nice although flaked quinoa is a bit pricey in my nearest deli. She does this for extra protein in the morning.

    Have a good afternoon all

I have always loved watching birds and their antics, and can sit and watch for hours - OH loses interest after about 10 mins and starts fidgeting. We are very lucky that Wales garden overlooks the harbour and is surrounded by wooded hills, so we have all the seabirds and woodland birds too. Mrs OG feeds in her garden (we did not put up feeders as we we not there all the time, can wait to have our own!) so we are surrounded by birdies singing and tweetling. We have buzzards that are harried by all the other birds as soon as they appear, they must get awfully fed upwith it. Nothing list the spirts more than the sound of birdsong - I think the best of all is blackbird after rain.

I'm slowly making my way through this thread (and what a fab one it is) but can I just ask is Mrs OG another poster? am confused

Helvelyn - Mrs OG is is MR OG's 'girlfriend'. Mr OG is my 93 year old neighbour in Wales!

Spent the whole day in the bl00dly loft, am filthy and only barely a third of the way through it. Be buzzed by a furious queen wasp who thought I was invading her territory and nearly went through the ceiling twice when my foot slipped.

This is a cautionary tale - DO NOT DUMP CARP IN YOUR LOFT IT WILL COME BACK AND BITE YOU!!!

Blimey! good for Mr OG! . As for the loft, I feel your pain, ours is crammed to the rafters and despite keep assuring each other that, "we will start on the loft this weekend" we never do. I get a vile sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever I think about it.
  • Anyone heard from GreyQueen? I noticed she hadn't posted over the last few days but according to her stats she has no posts since the 18th though I thought she posted this week. Hope she's ok. :(

Sunny but very windy here so have been getting blown about in the garden, getting the veggie beds and fruit cage ready for the season. I love birdsong too and we are lucky to have a garden that is a nesting paradise for a great variety of birds. The red squirrels are visiting again and their population seems very healthy but they are intent on digging up my tulip bulbs!

I think she was changing over to broadband, I'm sure she said something about waiting for a router to arrive in the post. Hopefully she'll be all set up and back soon.

Ha! Tulip bulbs must be a favorite food of squirrels!!! I planted a half dozen very expensive parrot tulip bulbs in the garden in London once and as soon as I moved away the squirrels came and dug them up, I went out to remonstrate, and the little bu&&ers ate them on the fence in front of me!!!

Fortunately I don't have enough trees between town and me for the squirrels to make it to my garden here!

  • Not been here for a couple of days - had to spend some time in hospital. Had a "funny turn" - which apparently was angina. Was there all day, got transferred on to a ward from A&E, then (to my relief) was seen by the consultant and sent home with some new medication (to add to the load I already take). Never mind!

DS came over from Bristol to stay with me for 24 hrs, but I knew I would be fine. My DD4 had to come up here to the house on Weds afternoon for me, as I was expecting an App Food delivery, and she took it in for me - and collected my overnight things while she was there.

Yesterday I had a delivery from ROSSPA - fresh veg and fruit as well as all the usual grocery lines. I had some fantastic veg, broccolli, celery, greens etc - huge, very fresh, and - very cheap! Two deliveries in two days - it was like Christmas! Made some choc muffins with the mix from App Foods (3.5 kg for £2.99 I think!), and took some over to DD4 and her family - came out fine, though I did add a little bit of baking powder in case the mix was a bit past it.

About buzzards - at my DH's funeral last month, while we were in the chapel (which has a whole wall of glass looking out over a pretty valley) two buzzards appeared and were soaring around together. So beautiful - DH would have loved it!

Hope everyone is OK, and that the birthday girls have had a good time!
Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!
