  • On a stockpiling note - the book I'm reading just now, which I think I mentioned earlier, has a passage about food supplies just prior to the introduction of rationing. The government apparenly deplored hoarding, but thought it was prudent to have 7 - 10 days supply of food on hand to cover issues with rationing starting, accessibility, and issued an advisory list. Makes really interesting reading - canned cheese anyone??:)
  • I hate to tell you this but they do still sell canned cheese -- drawback is it's in Mr T in the world foods section.

I would probably eat it as I am eating everything else in sight since giving up the cigs :D

DH is running round like Dobby the house elf this morning but I think he will be cleaning for an age as it's bright and sunny n showing all the muck up :rotfl::rotfl: Bet he will be glad when I am back to full swing and I bet he regrets agreeing to having four cats with all their fur :rotfl::rotfl:

  • Here in the West Midlands nearly all the industry has gone - although Jaguar Land Rover seem to be doing OK.
I was taken a tour of Avery Scales in Birmingham a while ago (as part of a Heritage tour, Bouton/Watt/Murdoch started their business on this site). Where once the factory would have been noisy with hundreds of workers there was now a few employees and lots of computers doing the same jobs. I can't see industry ever getting back to the employment it once had, not with new technology taking over. Technology will be improved, not reversed where one man is able to do the work of many. We shall be left with workers in the hospitality and public services industries if we're not careful. We should be MAKING things, not importing everything.
    Normal people worry me.

Does that mean he's not wearing any clothes?

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • PIC - DD1 who teaches took a school party of sixth formers on a World Challenge trip to the Himalayas about 7 years ago and says they were given the tinned cheese on chappatis every evening by the camp cooks as they arrived after a days trekking. She says its very nice - but I think they were hungry enough to eat anything that stood still long enough at that point so I'm not sure about the reccomendation! Cheers Lyn.
  • HobsonsChoice I agree - I can't see any other way back to mass employment. There's no turning back though is there?? I don't know what the answer is, but it needs to be something radical.
Lynn shall have a look for tinned cheese - you have me intrigued!

I've lived in the north-east my whole life and this area was full of coal mines and steel works, in my class at school at least 75% of kids had dads who were miners. They're all gone now and the mass employers seem to be call centres and supermarkets. :(

  • WESTCOASTSCOT - It is usually in the World Foods section of Mr T with the Indian section - I think it's a KRAFT product and is in a blue tin. Hope you can find it, I tried some and its like processed cheese - quite nice. Cheers Lyn.
