  • I remember in the dim and distant past when some form of marijuana was present in Dr Collis Brown's Linctus. Oh, happy days!

Didn't teething baby's Gripe Water contain alcohol? My Dad didn't bother with that expensive stuff. It was reported that he once dosed me with rum. No wonder there are alkies in my family if they all carried on like that.

It did a long time ago - not now.

I've just looked to an ancient bottle of Oblivon I was given when an old pharmacy closed down. It was marketed for teh "safe & effective sedation for children of all ages" & includes a dose for under 1's . "Within a few minutes of administration it reduces excitability, diminishes acute apprehension & calms overwrought children who would otherwise be unable to sleep".

We all know better now, but I may have been tempted years ago when I could have bought it from the corner shop. No idea how old the bottle is, but the liquid is still the most beautiful bright blue colour. Quite a strong chloroform type smell too (which is lovely :D. I loved making up chloroform water to preserve mixtures in the good old days).

I also inherited some old antibiotics, marketed as "the smoker's friend" with a picture of a man smoking & smiling on the packet. Amazing.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...
  • Afternoon everyone

Scrabbles I have just spent a while looking at your link :D What a good idea! I will look into it further as looking at the local area it would be good to get the kids involved in a treasure hunt. Our local pub has one hidden there and I always wondered what people were doing in the bushes :D oh me and my dirty mind :p

On day 10 of the no smoking :j it has been really hard the last couple of days. I have put some bits on the no smoking thread but there always seems to be an argument on there when I pop in.

I have had a stinking headache and felt sick for the past couple of days and I am really tired. I don't know if it is a bug or withdrawals.

DH is still getting bullied by the mega beast at work. He is in the forces so he is in a very difficult situation. He is on the edge as it is.

One of the kids off sick

Sold some stuff on Fleabay and nothing but complaints. Not right size etc even though size label and measurements are on the listing. I have had three issues in the last week all trying for a reduction in price. If it is the wrong size why do they want to keep it at a cheaper price? Fibbers!!

Bring back the old style meds I could do with some right now :D:p:A

afternoon all, have been so busy racing here and there have hardly had time to keep up.

had a lovely surprise this morning, I went to the ASD support group and they had a pamper session, so I had a very lovely massage all for free. :)

    Was very relaxing.

Codeine - knocks me silly, I find if i havent eaten a good amount just before I take it, it really knocks me for six and can make me feel quite ill. I now make sure I have eaten straight before I take it and whilst it still knocks me out I find am not so out of it, or sickly.

It's really cold here, my fingers are frozen!

Pic well done, you are doing so well. Sorry about the mega beast. I can never work out how or why people who are bullies get into positions that give them even more power. Met a few in my time.

Made some bread pudding last night and it is, even though I say it myself, gorgeous. The best I've ever made and on par with my mother's. The trouble is I keep eating it, which isn't supposed to happen.

Off to make another cuppa to warm up, and have some more BP. :)

I can empathise with that GFN, the spiritual side is every bit as important in life as the material bit - although it takes you a few years to find that out. Money and "stuff" cannot make you happy. Fact!
I have a back garden full of ice sculptures :) the hens water is frozen into one solid lump every morning and the top is frozen every couple of hours. I throw the lunps out into the grass and now have about 3-4 days worth looking dead arty and sparkling in the sun LOL.

Loving the idea of the ice sculptures :D Not so much how cold it must be though, hope you and hens are OK!

And it's true. I'm glad I 'woke up' as that's what it felt like. My old life crumbled away to reveal this new sparkly shiny one and it's like being given a gift. That sounds a little melodramatic but it certainly does feel that way. The other old saying is something about wanting what you have, not having what you want, which rings very true for me. I have a lot less 'stuff' and money, but everything in my life now is carefully chosen and I'm immensely grateful for it.

GFN could you use your time off to practise for your interview or are you going back to bed? Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks very much for the thoughts. I'm still in bed feeling pretty icky (with a very attractive bit of bog roll stuck up one nostril that won't stop running, lovely!!). I plan to have a very hot bath in a bit and am drinking lemon and honey. Luckily I think I am coldy, not flu-ey, as I still have an appetite so it will pass, hopefully quickly, then I'll start studying and practising :)

The lemon and honey is another 'old recipe' I guess. My parents used to add whiskey when I was a child and ill. I can't stand the stuff now so I blame them :p Mum once admitted she gave me a tot to make me sleep (terrible insomniac baby, still am!). I conked straight out and she was terrified she'd killed me :rotfl:Obviously no harm done, apart from the usual eccentricities, but I blame her for those as well :D

I just had some lovely leftover cottage pie for lunch. Moved-in-friend surprised us by having made a huge pot last night, with normal and sweet potato mash plus cheese on top. It was lovely and unexpected to come home to a cooked meal, and he even portioned up the leftovers into tubs for OH and I's lunches, how sweet is that? :)

The wind is howling in a very spooky way outside, but it's still very bright and I opened the back door a smidge for a blast of the fresh air, being careful not to let Dolly Cat out, as she stares wistfully through the glass and thinks we are Very Dumb Humans for not understanding her plaintive requests to be let out.

    Can't believe it's gone 2pm!
Proud to be a moneysaver :)

    Afternoon Chaps!

It is gloriously sunny here but freezing cold. I have just walked down the hill and looking out at the harbour there is a rimey frozen edge to the sea, so it really was perishing overnight, we rarely get frosts like that so close to the coast. And the little pond in Mr OGs garden had ice an inch thick on it, I could hardly break it.

Just had a fab morning meeting KatieOwl and her lovely daughters (good looks, brains and heads delightfully screwed on to OS ways). I left them at the till in the shop with armfuls of lovely yarn...

Went into the coop next door and bagged an amazing Whoopsie haul - £26 worth of food for £6.50. I have no idea how they decide how much to discount - they have been very poor all week, and then suddenly really good reductions.

I once had a terrible attack of renal colic and the dr prescribed me Largactyl - which I later found out is a chemical cosh they used on violent prisoners! I spent two weeks in what could only be called a 'trippy' haze, and felt like I was floating about three feet off the ground the whole time. Mind you, the pain was excruciating, worst I have ever experienced.

No OH to cater for tonight as he is up in the Big Smoke for a couple of days, so will indulge myself with sardines on toast and a cup of tea for my dinner. I know how to have a good time!

Hugs for those who need them, willpowery vibes for those trying to kick the weed, try to stay warm everyone (she said sitting in a freezing living room defiantly not putting the heating on!)

  • Yuk! Had to come home from work before lunchtime, I've been full of cold for nearly a week and have finally given in. I feel less coldy today - my nose is running less than earlier in the week but I feel AWFUL, really thick headed, my head hurts and I ache all over. I need to go in tomorrow so I'm curled up on the sofa hoping that I don't feel this bad tomorrow.

I had to turn the heating on overnight last night as I was freezing in bed - I normally dislike running the heating at night but I just couldn't cope with feeling dreadful :(

Hugs to all that need them (don't breathe though you don't want my germs!).

I know we are all being careful about heating, but I also think we need to take care too, as there are more deaths in the cold weather. Being cold affects us in many ways and one is that it raises blood pressure. So, keep warm.

Hugs to all those who need them and hope those feeling ill will feel better soon.
  • Codeine for some reason is the only painkiller that will deal with my migraines - I feel that odd way, spaced out, after taking them, but worth it, anything better than the pain of migraine and I have tried everything on the market as had them since 18. Only big snag now as I am take Oxycontin and Oxynorm and they do not mix with Codeine unfortunately ( Serotonin Syndrome) so if one hits not long after taking them I am stuck and because of this doctor of course will not prescribe 30mg any more so am hoarding the ones I do have for really bad migraines - to be used by end if 2013. Its just annoying the Oxycontin and Oxynorm don't touch them at all but they don't make me feel spaced out, thankfully so far no bad effects from them just good ones like pain levels reducing. On plus side a specialist told me many years ago that migraines often go when you turn 55 ( I think I was about 32 at the time so it felt forever till 55 )and although not fully gone the amount I have now are far, far less so am hoping they do vanish before I run out of the high strength Codeine.

I have been tired this week but no major headaches, just niggly ones and today I admit I want a cigarette but not buying any, can't afford them anyway as hubbys hours down so much he only brought home £133 this week and its going to stay on that now.

Going to get him to nip me up to Mr S at 5pm when they reduce in the hope I can pick up some bits - not that the reductions are ever much. Its our nearest supermarket although Mr T is only half a mile further but I don't like their own brands, where as we do like nearly all of Mr S basics range. Unfortunately Lidl is 5 miles away and Aldi 7 miles so not worth the petrol so only go to either if I want one of their specials. When I put in my usual shop in mysupermarket Mr S has always come out cheaper for us. We do have a Mr M a mile away but again don't like a lot of their stuff. We do have a small shopping centre a mile away as well but at the moment I have no energy to walk round all the shops there as you need to, to pick up the cheapest items. Could take my scooter but have to admit am a bit nervous using it in a closed environment and although all shops are supposed to be scooter and wheelchair accessible some are rather small or have narrow aisles - especially 99p shop. I don't really want to go out due to lack of energy, and hubby trying to talk me out of me, to him shopping should be done once a week at most unless you already happen to be out for something else, but need to see if can get anything we use reduced, so got to try and do it daily. Daft thing is no energy yet cannot sleep much, only got two hours last night and they were broken and 3 hrs the previous 4 nights and for some mad reason I cannot seem to fall asleep till around 4am even if like Sunday night I am in bed by 9pm I just lie there awake but to tired to even sit up. You would think after 14 years I would be used to times like this but doubt I ever will be, one plus is pain levels are low at moment.

Right enough moaning, better go and have a shower it usually makes me feel a bit better for a while as we have to have evening meal around 4pm as hubby has his bowls tonight and so no time to have it after popping to shops - well most people could but he is a very, very slow eater and as its beef sweet and sour I made in sc yesterday I am reheating it and easier to heat the lot at once than some for him then mine later. I defrosted 500g of stewing beef on Tuesday night and put half in one sc and made into chilli beef and other half in my second sc and made into the beef sweet and sour, had rice with the chilli beef so having pasta tonight. Not that long ago I would have used the whole 500g for just us, yet I used to use same amount of meat to feed 5 of us, I just never cut down when children moved out at long last am learning.

Stay warm if you can indoors and out,

    hugs to all
