Hubby's syndicate won about £300 - so he got £36 of it I think.

Well done :T - it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

Dad is fed up - he must be feeling better :D He will be in for at least a week though, so they are saying. At least I know he is being looked after in there.

Didn't want to go to work - like, REALLY didn't, knot in the stomach and all. Went - had a lovely day! ;) Excellent group of students, some cheeky chappies in the front and a couple of good meetings :T I must learn to remember that I get paid reasonably well for a job I can do with no bother and just get on with it.

Went to a meeting at DD's school tonight - she is off to Poland in a couple of weeks, and has to be at school at 2.45 - AM!!!!! She is going to Auschwitz - an amazing opportunity for her - if somewhat sobering.

We haven't had snow :T but it has rained incessantly today. I bloomin hate January - and I'm not much fonder of February!

Hi all:) Welcome to all who are new. I know you will enjoy here and will learn so much. We all learn from each other:) Going to the library in the morning, as have read my last book. I finished reading Helen Forrester(By the Waters of Liverpool) I also read two of her other books called Lime Street at Two, and Twopence to Cross The Mersey. Very honest and moving writing about her early poverty stricken life in Liverpool.

I met her many years ago when she was over from Canada, she gave a talk at our local library, lovely woman. Still got my copy of Twopence across the Mersey that she signed.

For all you bread making people, thought you might like to look at this link http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2007/nov/24/foodanddrink.baking16
I have a breadmaker which I use all the time, I hardly every buy bread. But you can make the bread in this link in a saucepan (well I do) and we absolutely love it...I just can't stop making (or eating it). It's great if you like this type of bread and I thought when I make the next loaf I will substitute wholemeal flour for wholegrain for a change. Also, I use any oats that I happen to have in:)

Just want to say, that it can take weeks or even months before you hear. Unless of course it is for instant wins. Some comps have almost instant notifications but there have been many times where I've given up or forgotten comps and then a winning notification arrives. Good luck. :A

IBitterandtwisted - how much does making your own bread save you?

At the moment, nothing. I've got to claw back the initial £15 investment first. If I was a sensible housekeeper I'd keep a price-book but unfortunately I don't so I can't even calculate the cost of the ingredients. My own feeling is that it's not much.

3 1/3 cups of plain flour
    1 tablespoon of veg oil
    1 teaspoon of salt
    1 teaspoon of sugar
    2 teaspoons of dried yeast.
    Plus the leccy

I absolutely refuse to believe that the cost would come anywhere near what the baker or supermarket charges. It comes out about half the size of a large sandwich loaf. I got totally fed up of either a 25 minute walk each way or £2.60 there and back on the bus to buy some, so did without. And now I don't have to. Hooray!

Thanks for all the good luck messages regarding my smoking and I am glad it has inspired someone else to have a go :T Had a couple of wobbles but the book I have read said it was like having a little monster inside you and every time you have a pang a little more of him dies so when you have a pang don't reach for your fags just be pleased he is dying. Problem is I have spent a few times today saying die you B.....d to mid air :rotfl::rotfl:

If I remember correctly, someone here worked it out to about 54p a loaf inc leccy, so perhaps not cheaper than a 'value' loaf, but infinately nicer, more convenient and generally makes you feel smug!

We would always buy nice (aka expensive!) bread, so we save loads using the BM. Have fun with it!
