PAH- will watch out for it.

Well have just ordered a new coat, have been struggling with very thin one and adding cardigans but have been so cold have been looking to buy a new one, my trouble is I cant bear the touch of microfleece (it upsets my eczema), so have been looking at other linings. Have been ages looking, finally found perfect one in TJHughes but they didnt have right size, nor getting any more. Had a google and found Makro selling similar one cheaper online with free delivery no need for member card!! So have placed order just hoping it gets here quickly!!

I'm not sure about teas and coffee - they will not get very far before they get cold, what do people think?

And I could hold a small stock of 'essentials' - things people forget and then need for the trip - any ideas? I though about things like blister plasters, lipsalve, travel size sun block (wishful thinking !)?

I used to do a fair bit of walking in the Grampians. I ended up with a whole bunch of routes that were contrived to call by a particular farmhouse. The reason being a hot drink in a proper mug and a slice of rich fruit cake, sheer luxury. No matter what state we'd arrived in, usually wet and bedraggled, we'd leave quarter of an our later with freshly filled flasks, a half pint of fresh milk (backpacking you live on dried stuff) sometimes a couple of eggs, a smile on our faces and a spring in our step. Some routes added an extra day of walking to include that cuppa. They had a stream of regulars, the only marketing being word of mouth and a couple of painted signs
I'd rather have that drink in a real mug, and a 10 minute break than, carry a polystyrene cup away.

    Good luck with this.

Thanks for that Nuatha, lots of food for thought! I have always dreamed of running a tearoom, would love to, but I am sure the council here would have other ideas, even though there is nothing here for tourists or walkers, just a badly-run pub that is now closed most of the week.

The author of the midwife book is Jennifer Worth, she wrote several I think about poor living conditions in London. She died last of cancer last year, before she was able to see the programme made, which is a shame. I believe she published a book in 2010 about facing a terminal illness.
Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures
  • Call the midwife is by Jennifer Worth - just ordered mine of amazon £2.70 with post

Oh I read that book years ago, really makes you think.
  • My daughter is friends with Jennifer Worth's granddaughter, she went to the screening in London last week and met all the actors. Sadly Jennifer past away last year from cancer so didn't get to see the show but she knew it was being made and had a lot of input, my daughter used to love listening to all her stories about being a midwife, she was a lovely lady.
  • Mrs Chip: HOT SOUP! In a polystyrene cup for the impatient or a bowl with fresh bread for the tired or those who need a rest and a wee. Do you need a license of some description or formal planning to do something like that? Health & Safety and Hygiene Regs. EEK!

I'm quite cross with gailey's husband. It's just as flaming-well that she saved all of that cash on buying cut-price bargains when he's gone out and bought that remote for more than he could have "as a surprise". No !!!!!!! it was a surprise. I know we only hear one half of what goes on at Gailey Hall but he spends goodness knows how much on smoking cigs every week (over six quid a packet!) and then can't be let out of the house on his own with money. While g's flying about the place, stocking up on bargains, cooking from scratch, budgeting to what sounds like an inch of her life and doing wonders as her full-time job. I know it's none of my damned business and she's right about picking battles but it doesn't sound very fair. Or responsible. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

It's plain to see why I'm not married with kids at 57 and never have been. I'm just too ruddy stroppy

As soon as the kitchen next door is sorted, the chalkboard will go up! - going to do walkers packed lunches, hot drinks, flask fills, cakes etc, as a sideline to the van business - so any of you walkers, let me know what sort of things you would like to be able to buy on your walks (I know not very OS, but I'm sure lots of the walkers are not quite as OS as us lot!).

ETA : Kate, sooo funny re the DD Onesie!

Mrs Chip how is it going to work, you at home all the time, OH driving the van? That's what we do, only whenever I have to do a quick delivery DH can't do because he is on his van route, we get a work call. Half the rest of the time the phone never rings!

Mrs Chip: May be worth selling the idea of the cafe on the "lack of amenities for locals" and "boosting tourism" at the same time!:D
