Just a quick post to say I'm home for the night now and all cats are bedded down.
Minor panic with one who didn't appear the other 2 times I went, using that horrid lane, but turned up tonight. Relieved. Took the approach of a rally driver this time using the premise that the faster I go the further I will be up the road, thus avoiding being the one who has to reverse! It was a bit hairy, but worked. :rotfl::eek:
I have had to overcome my fear of the dark with this "career path" as it's pitch black in most places I go to. Scared the life out of myself when I shone the torch at my car and my dog 's eyes were glowing green like the hound of the Baskerville's! :rotfl:She's white so it added to the effect.
Hi Dragoncry, I love your user name.:wave:

Some bookshops do a 'Classics' range of paperbacks that are 99p - a good way to pick up those 'always meant to read' books.
Reading the first three chapters of GE last night, you realise how much of the story - mainly the small character detail that dickens was so good at. I giggled several times at the way he described his relations - and none of that came across in any of the adaptations!
I know he can be a bit turgid, but when he is on form he is a most wonderful observer of the human condition and had a great sense of humour.
Didn't Dickens' books come out as magazine serialisations originally? So he needed to have something to draw the reader in for each of the many chapters and make them want to continue. Unfortunately even a 3 hr TV production can't fit it all in and it's probably for the best as I'm sure my picture of the relations will be different to yoursRoll on 9pm. Then Sherlock on Sunday :T
Katieowl - I've just bought Clochemerle from Amazon - very funny book, a sort of French Vicar of Dibley 70 years ago."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -
True to 'out with the old' thinking I've been doing in preparation for the new year, for a new positive me, I have decided to clear out my wardrobe. I'm a size 14-16 and at 32 I think this is the way I shall stay, give or take a few pounds. So, all of my size 10/12 garments will have to leave the wardrobe. I've had two children and the wrong side of 30. I have to let that part of me go and work on this me.
That sounds a bit defeatist! Nothing wrong with loving yourself as you are but I rather feel 32 is a little young to be giving up on yourself like that!
Obviously it's your choice, but at a size 16 you would be bordering on unhealthy (depending on height) and when you consider you will almost certainly put on a bit during the menopause and it will be harder to lose after that... you could be looking at reaching old age a lot heavier... which is not good for a lot of health reasons. Would be a lot easier to lose the weight now while you're still young...
Sorry, I have a bit of a 'thing' about weight at the moment... my SIL has gone from a size 12 to a size 22+ in 10 years and is now dangerously obese but won't do anything about it or admit it causes problems... I really worry about her getting diabetes soon and she's only 35...
If anyone is interested in losing weight in 2012 I am running a New Year Challenge on the Old Style Weight Loss thread. I have gone from a size 16/18 to a 12/14 this year and aiming for another 10lbs loss in 2012 and to get back into the jeans I bought 6 weeks AFTER having first baby!June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

A.J.Cronin is depressing reading - you have to be very strong to read him. But he wrote about real life for poor people, and cause a huge stir with his books. So my mother said anyway - she thought I was off my head wanting to read the stuff. But I think it should be required reading ...I liked "The Stars Look Down" and "The Citadel" .0

I liked the Citadel but can barely remember it.
Well, we have had dad's 80th birthday party today and - praise the lord - it went well. He was always a bit of a grumpy old so[STRIKE]d[/STRIKE] and so and therefore we were a bit worried about how he would be. But he was fine, family arrived, everyone was there for a few hours and he sat there lording it over us all with a beaming grin.
My sister and i did a buffet - just party food, crisps and dips and some sweet stuff, mostly left over from our christmas festivities and I had made him a cake. All the grandchildren behaved and he behaved with them - sometimes he can be quite nasty. The only sad thing was that mum would have loved it but she died 2 years ago - but i have to say that we didn't dwell on the fact that she was missing, which i think is probably a good thing.
I am staying the night with him as I thought it would be awful to have a house full and then everyone to go and leave him alone. I am going home tomorrow via SIL for a meal. it will be nice to be home sort of on our own. Favourite niece is coming home with us but she is like our 3rd child and a great excuse to get our own two out and about doing things.
However the downside of staying the night with dad is that i have to watch Emmerdale and then the darts VERY LOUDLY! :rotfl:
January is going to be the same as many - freezer and store cupboard food. I am allowing myself a budget which i am going to have in cash and only spend that. I think left over christmas pork will feature highly :rotfl:
Might try for some bargain whoopsies late on Saturday - you never know...I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
I managed to get 2 chooks and a lump of pork for a tenner. They are now roosting in the freezer.

My father is 78 and a miserable self centered s*d, and I have not seen him since my mother's funeral in January. My brother asked him today what his plans were for tomorrow (is first anniversary of mum dying) and he said it was not a special day. Brother will be in bits but father would no more consider this as fly to the moon.
Being deaf as a post the TV is on constantly at full blast and poor mum was stuck in living room with him for last four years of her life, TV blaring so that we could not speak (her stroke meant speaking for her was difficult) and everyone had to shout to be heard.
I had to stop visiting as I found not being able to make things better for mum too stressful, I would argue with him and make things worse for mum. I am not a good enough person to be able to forgive him for how he behaved towards mum in her last years.Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0
