We have something very similar in Wales too...it's called Bara Brith (Speckled Bread) and it's made by soaking the fruit overnight in cold tea, and then mixing it up with sugar, flour, and eggs. Also fat free and sometimes served with chunk of cheese. I had a 'Welsh tea' at Dylan Thomas's boat house in Lauharne (pronounced Larne!) which was slices of bara brith, a good lump of Welsh cheese, butter, welshcakes, raspberry jam and a pot of tea. Very tasty indeed, very memorable as the place and the view are awesome.

    I'm homesick now.

And we have Welsh tea which is very very delicious. Not that it is grown in Wales (bit like the Yorkshire!). As far as I know the only place in the UK where tea is grown is in Cornwall, and that is a very expensive brew indeed!

I've not tried that - is it nice? Supposed to be suited to the water these regional teas aren't they?

We buy Glengettie from Lidl, we used to have Twinings Everyday, but think this is nicer (it is quite a robust brew but not too tannic) I think it's supposed to be for hard water but we have got soft:rotfl:.

Lovely with a couple of welshcakes!

Just thought I'd pass this on as it was something I've never had before - pork cheeks are really tasty!
DS bought some in Waitrose and they were £2.99 per kilo, £1.60 for a large serving for four hungry people. (I'm going to check out the butchers tomorrow to see if they're any cheaper there) He did them in the slow cooker with onions, stock, wine etc and they were absolutely delicious. He is a real foodie and lives in that there London up there, where he reckons such delicacies cost a fortune in the swankier restaurants. I bet our grannies ate them!

D&DD - there is a good venison recipe here:

    http://highlandgame.com/recipe_detail.aspx?id=59

These people supply Mr M with venison and I have cooked the stew in the slowcooker as well as on the stove. It's the recipe on the back of the packet of venison chunks. It is straightforward and very rich and yummy. It would make a good pie filling. I would add extra veg, perhaps mushrooms as the stew is very rich and a little goes a long way. I also cut the chunks smaller.

  • woohoo! Have finally caught up on the thread!! :j haven't had chnace to look since last friday so has taken 2 slices of cake and several cups of tea to get up to date.

Glad to be back home now, last few days have been quite eventful. Mum and Dad had a flood caused by a blocked septic tank on christmas eve and we were up til gon 2am trying to clean up. Fortnatly it was water from the shower coming through rather than anything from the loo  it did mean that we had no loo or shower/bath for the 3 days we were there!!! Fortunatly the house next door is a second home for a lovely couple who said we could use their facilities until they came up. Did mean lots of dashes across the yard in the yucky weather, but guess it'll be one of those christmas's we'll remember!!

Had trip up to the in laws on boxing day... I always find it hard work but christmas with them was especially testing. My MIL response to being given a hamper of homemade goodies we'd spent hours working on was to go to the cupboard and get some of hers out with a response of 'i suppose I should give you some of these in return'. It made me really mad. It just seemed so ungrateful. We tried to make it look all nice and professional and it just wasn't appreciated. I don't know why we bother

Anyway back home now and been having a lovely time relaxing with DH. He's off between christmas and new year and we're getting to spend some proper time together :p had a lovely trip to the ballet this afternoon. I'd really wanted to go but couldn't really afford the tickets... checked out the matenee (sp??) prices and managed to get 2 tickets for what it would have cost to go to the evening performance. DH said we should make it like a proper night out so we got dressed up for the ocasion and had posh tea when we got home (woopsie goodies from asda costing £1.84 for meal for 2!!) :) All in all a good day.

Hope everyone else is doing ok and has survived the Christmas madness ::hugs:: to all who need them
