What happens when SMP runs out?

My sisters SMP has just finished and I'm wondering what this means for her finances. Her partner had to sign off JSA as she was on SMP, he started a job last week which wont pay him until the 18th Dec, but since he wasn't in receipt of benefits is receiving no support from the jobcentre. My sister is unable to return to work as she can afford neither the childcare of travel costs for the month until she's paid. She currently receives £140 a week in tax credits which, with child benefit for her baby is their only income at the moment. I'm just wondering if her tax credits will be evaluated more favourably with their change in circumstances (her partner will be earning 16000pa), or if they should be entitled to extra help with their rent etc...

  • There used to be a link to a benefits calculator at the top of the benefits board - can't see it now? But that is probably the best way to see what your sister could now claim. Just to check - did she receive an enhanced maternity package or just the statutory one? If it was enhanced by her firm, and she doesn't return to work, she may be asked to return the "extra".

There isnt anything they can claim as she is in employment and so is he. May get extra help with housing benefit but they will take into account his 16k income and tax credits
  • Thanks I'll let her know. She was only on basic maternity so don't think that should be a problem for her.
  • She's getting more than me at the moment - I'm on £128 SMP with zilcho in tax credits!

Granted, I do have an OH in employment.

Yes, but she won't be employed as she's considering not returning to work at the end of her maternity leave.
