If you are running Windows Xp, simply go to start>Accessories>system tools>backup

then choose the TARGET destination as your DVD Writer

I use Deepburner for file burning. Id say that the most common things to backup are your mail in and outbox, favorites, contacts, pictures and music, and any other files you may have such as word files. Go through your backup and make sure they have backed up ok before you delete the files off your hard drive.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
You could use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard...

IMHO, given the cheaposity of USB hard drives you'd be better off getting one. The slowness and hassle of burning multiple DVDs and then keeping incremental backup sets on the correct DVD puts you right off doing backups. Soon after which your hard disk destroys itself!

But then again, my USB HDD has just gone fizz-bang; I hope it's just the enclosure or I'm in trouble.

Hi, I'm trying to back up to disc too, I'm running XP (home) but there isn't an option in system tools for backup?
