damage when entering car park

  • Hi Sarah, this is a multi storey car park that I've used regularly for the last few years. I typically go in through the left entrance just by habit but of course have gone through the right at times too. What I'm saying is that I positioned the car to through the left entrance as there was no advance warning that it was closed. It was only just as I approached it that I noticed the cone. It was dark and the cone was blue so wasn't obvious. This left me little opportunity to position the car properly to get into the right entrance so I could get round the corner after getting through. Whilst I accept that I was driving etc my point is that I would not have had a problem getting round the corner after entering the car park had I been able to recognise early on that the left entrance was closed.

Anyway, I realise that there is little point in trying to claim from the car park as they will be covered for these sort of things. It'd probably just be tit for tat anyway c'os they might try to charge me for denting the plastic thing.

I've phoned my insurance and have notified them of the incident. Still getting it repaired privately. They've said that's fine. Just made me aware that I'd have £300 excess and would lose my no claims discount. I currently have 3 ncd unprotected (I've been driving just less than 4 years). Although the repair costs more than the excess, I think not making a claim is the best option. Also better to have notified insurance especially as there is a third party.

The last incident involved a concrete pillar so there was no third party and I had it privately repaired. ?

Concrete pillar, now a bollard.

So are you saying the cone was BEHIND the barrier or in front or it?

Either way you're almost certainly on a loser. NCP are sharks and thats why some folks call them "Nasty Car Parks". They could easily afford to compensate you - they make profits of around £760m a year I read somewhere but they just treat cash as a one way process - They take it from you and NEVER give it to you.

Isnt that why cars are fitted with forward and reverse gears and a steering wheel.

It was down to you to manouvere yourself in to the correct position to make the turn.

    Sorry if that sounds harsh

I would forget about it after you have your car repaired
  • Can't say I've had much luck with my car recently and I am a good driver and normally very careful. I reversed into a concrete pillar and scratched my bumper a few weeks ago. Although I had husband's Gran bleating loudly in my ear distracting me, I can accept that it was a stupid thing to do and my fault. Just paid to give it fixed and forget about it.

Car park incident a little bit different. Yes I was a bit stupid and didn't maneouvre the car that well but really had little warning that the entrance I had prepared to go into was actually closed. Couldn't reverse as would have meant going onto road. It would have helped it the staff had put up a sign that the entrance was closed instead of placing a blue coloured cone in front of it when it was dark!

Anyway, only wanted advice about what to do re insurance, claiming or not, and how to deal with car park so thanks very much for those who've been so kind and helpful.

Cheers for those of you who are ridiculing me and blaming me for the incident. I'm not wholly blaming the car park and have said that I'm not pursuing a claim with them so bit confused why the big attack.

Sorry if it sounds harsh, but really it is hardly their fault if you are not observant and aware of what is going on around you and it does sound like you are blaming them from your post in your other thread.
Basically due to certain circumstances which could have been avoided by NCP, I bumped my car off a plastic bollard thing just passed the entrance barrier.
