Make-up, does it go off?

I don't wear foundation every day, and only use it on nights out. I don't go out much, so the tube I've got is probably years old!

I was out last night and put the foundation all over my face, then finished off with my usual face powder. I washed it off before I went to bed last night.

When I woke up this morning, I've got dark red blotches all over my face. They are still there this evening, and my face now feels like it's burning and it's itchy.

Could it be the foundation that's cause the rash?
Here I go again on my own....

    Poor Becles, that sounds uncomfortable.

I think it can go off, they say not to keep mascara for more than a few months etc. Maybe your skin has become more sensitive?

I'm sure I've read that generally make up should be used within six months of opening it. I know my Clinique foundations have separated and gone really horrible. I've switched to tinted moisturiser now, find it is quite flattering.

But at the price of make up, who in their right mind is going to buy a new bottle especially if it's not used very often?! You'd be chucking away nearly full bottles all the time..that's one way they make their money! Maybe a good strategy would be to do the rounds of the make up counters and ask for samples!? Or maybe keeping it in the fridge would perhaps prolong the life of it - this is good for nail varnish btw, though haven't actually worn any of that for about 5 years.

One piece of advice about make up I thought actually made sense was to buy those little applicator things for eye make up rather than continually use the one that comes with it. These things are a haven for bacteria so sensible to change them every now and again.

It sounds like you have developed an allergy. Try doing a patch test - put a blob on your arm, your neck or your back then cover it with a plaster for 24 hours and make sure it doesn't get wet. Then take the plaster off to see if any irritation has occured...if yes, it's probably an allergic reaction to the make up. It could though be an allergic reaction to anything else, eg the soap or cleanser you used, so do patch tests for those too!

I read an article a while ago that had general guides. I think foundation was 1 year, powder/blusher 2 years, eye stuff 3-6 months and lippy 2 years. I agree about not wanting to chuck stuff that cost a bomb though!

I tried it again and it must have gone off. It was only Maybelline though, so not too expensive to throw it away.

I'm 29 and still have stuff that I bought as a teenager :o Think I'll have a good clear out too :D

Yes make up can go off .... but also, allergies usually develop over time i.e. you are "not born" with the allergy. So you could find you have developed an allergy to something in that particular foundation, Becles.
