  • Blastredeye, sounds like something you wouldn't want to make a hobby of! Will take getting it done a lot more seriously now. Although it was my intention to address it, it's easy to put things like this to the back of your mind while the car seems to be running OK.

    Had a guardian angel in the form of a car load of rugby fans, never did get the chance to thank them.

    Might be worth eyeing up some breakdown cover if you havn't already got some. I know pennies are tight, better safe than sorry though.

    I know :(. AA cover only lapsed recently and lack of cover has been weighing on my mind more heavily since finding this work needs to be done.
    Pennies even tighter than usual as I have just moved house which took all the spare cash I had saved.
    I think I know what I'll be asking Santa for this year!

    I do have one local garage in mind that I've used before who were very good, but they've recently changed hands. Will start asking around for recommendations.

    scheming_gypsy I worked out that the labour costs at the Honda dealer I went to were in the region of £85 an hour :cool:
    I don't mind going there for a service or MOT at a (near enough)fixed price(which is when this prob came to light), but I blanched at the quoted cost for this work.

    £85 doesn't sound surprising for a main dealer. An indie will probably be half that, if not less, so there's £100 at least off the cost!
  • if its the outer cv boots near the brakes it would take less than an hour to do both if the garage has a cv boot spreader. no need to remove cv joint with one of those.

    I've changed a few cv boots in my time. I know I couldn't replace two and have the car back on it's wheels in an hour if my life depended on it. Knowing main dealer labour charges, I don't think £300 is out of the ordinary.

    As has been said, a good independent garage is the OP's best bet. It still isn't going to be pennies though.

    5 year old rubber not uncommon for it to crack and perish.

    Silly thing though it would have lasted longer with more regular use.


    £300 for 2 x £10 (or less) rubber boots, And an hour or so to fit each side?

    I think you need a better garage.

    Have a feeling you may be spot on with that as they mentioned possible impact on brakes. They probably quoted for replacing whole kit and caboodle.

    £300+ could be a bit on the high side.
    Pretty sure my Celica needed a replacement CV gaitor for it's MOT two years ago. I'm pretty friendly with the garage who did it and they only charged me £20 and did it while I waited. The parts are relatively cheap if i remember correctly and it's not a long procedure; so under two hours labour and a hand full of beans for the boots.

    Boot cost me £8, new hub nut was £3, and the last time I took the (corroded on) wheel off took my half an hour.

    To get the bottom ball joint split, the hub out, cleaned, greased, new boot on, clips, on, back together, was at least an hour and a half. And that was without removing the driveshaft, just using a cone.
    Labour at my local garage is minimum of an hour at £60 for the same job.
    Per side as well.

    Yeah it surprised me. Like you said, the parts are cheap it's just a bit fiddly; took them a while to do but didn't charge the fully hourly rate.
  • Usually less than £200 to have CV boots replaced.

    They're annoying as they seem totally pot luck - my friend's MG ZS has just had one fail at 131k on an 03 plate, yet my 03 plate Rover on 176k is still on originals and they look like new.

    Go figure! :p
