Freeview HD without Satellite Dish or Cable?

Hello
my freeview recorder box has broken so looking for a new one. Reading around everyone seems to say its only worth buying a new HD one but I dont have a satellite dish or cable - just standard aerial. Can you use a HD freeview recorder with a standard aerial??

a friend offered me his Goodmans Freesat HD recorder but there is no aerial socket to connect so guess it wont work??

thanks

There is no such thing as a "Freeview aerial".
For Freeview you need a good quality 'ordinary' TV aerial, which can pull in the signal from your nearest TV transmitter - the nearer it is, the less complex is the aerial needed; the further the more elements and the more complex it will need to be. Your current aerial may not be adequate...

For Freesat you need to have a dish pointing at the correct satellite.

You can get HD TV via Freeview, better choice when your area has gone completely digital. DG

Just to clarify, Freeview (including Freeview HD) is a terrestial service via a aerial.
Freesat is a satellite service via a dish.
I wouldn't bother with the Goodmans Freesat box as it may only be SD. Get yourself a decent Freeview HD PVR-Humax is the brand to go for.

As per macman above, as usual!
If you got all the channels on your old Freeview PVR, then, as long as your area has switched, your aerial will be able to receive FreeviewHD if you buy a FreeviewHD PVR.

That's because it's a FreeSat HD recorder and not a Freeview HD terrestrial recorder. That Goodmans requires a Satellite dish, whereas a Freeview HD recorder/PVR requires a normal TV aerial as already mentioned.

You could fit a small dish or possibly get one fitted by Sky, although those a a bit rubbish IMO.

The OP does mention the Goodmans as being HD, although that may not be accurate if it's being given away. Giving away Freeview SD boxes could be expected with people wanting to upgrade to DVB-T2 HD versions but not HD FreeSat boxes.

I don't think it's an option to discount because it could do what is needed if a Satellite dish could be fitted.
