I know they're fairly cheap, so perhaps it's no great deal.
I have a Challenge inflator which is 9+ years old. The other day it dealt with three tyres without a hitch. On the final tyre I had set the desired pressure and the inflator reported some underinflation.
Started inflator and it clicked off straightway, on second try the digi readout shot up to 60+ after only momentarily starting. Only on third try did it work.
Could it be just be a minor glitch, or does this scrooge need to disturb the mpths and dust in his wallet?:D

If the inflator tube is blocked somehow by not being attached properly to the tyre 'valve' you would certainly get the pressure shooting up! Take the connector thing off and reattach it again, as you did.
The fact that three tyres were OK makes this sound a strong possibility.0 -

Might have been a bit of grit in the valve which was blown out when you removed the inflator the first time.0
