Probably stupid DVDR question

I want to find how the technology works!

Is an appropriate tuner necessary in a DVDR or VCR? If I have Sky (not Sky+) and the DVDR has not got an analogue tuner, can I set my system up so that I can watch analogue TV whilst recording Sky or watch Sky whilst recording analogue TV? What would the wiring sequence be, and would it be easy to use the equipment?

BTW paying £10/month does not enthral me.

If you haven't got an analogue tuner in the dvd/vhs recorder it will be difficult to record analogue TV. However virtually all such recorders have a tuner, so it wouldn't usually be a problem. If you have a video without a tuner then you will need to get a picture feed from something with a tuner, such as TV. You might get a TV with a scart sending a picture out (these are not so common), which you could plug into the video scart input However doing this would mean you couldn't watch something else on the TV.

The other way round will be easier ie you could sent a picture from sky to the dvd recorder using a scart lead, and record. Then you could watch normal TV using the built in TV tuner. Alternatively, buy a cheap freeview box and connect to the recorder, whilst connecting the sky to the second scart input on the recorder. Again for this to work you will need multiple scart sockets on the TV so you can connect it as well.
I recently had such a set-up - sky, Freeview and dvd recorder, and bought a scart switch box for about £10 from Maplin which routed the signals.

All sound more complicated than it really is to get working.

Just upgraded to sky plus - via a series of offers, free skysports for 6 mths, free skyplus box etc and I must say it is good.
