India - Travel money gift

Want to give my lad some rupees but as you can't get them in the UK how can I find an acceptable gift form? Tried the Post Office gift card but that's a) in dollars, sterling or Euros so there'd be a commission charge b) he'd have to come and sign which would ruin the gift element. Any ideas more than welcome....

Travelex Cash Passport Globe or the Kalixa Card ordered via TopCashBack or Quidco (if you have an existing Quidco account).
Cashback website > Travelex > Globe card.
Do not load the Prepaid card with any of these bank cards as they may class the load as a cash withdrawal and charge accordingly: Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Natwest, Santander or RBS. Co-op may charge too, but may refund if pressed(Simply because there is nothing in their T&Cs about this charge).0 -
Give him either US dollars (in small denominations preferably) or UK notes...either will be pretty easy to spend / convert when he's there, and it's much easier than having to find a cash point in a tricky situation
(just thought, obviously the above is only good if it's not a huge amount of money...if you are planning on giving him a lot then maybe a few travellers cheques too? I realise they're a little outdated now, but it's useful to have a variety of money sources, I've lost track of the number of times the only cashpoint in a fair sized indian town is closed with seemingly no chance of it opening soon!)Aiming for that elusive 'debt free' by Christmas 2012
