laptop running very slow

Hi
my laptop is running very slow. Sometimes it may take several minutes to get into explorer. I have looked in ipconfig, start menu and have unticked all the boxes except the important ones but its still as slow as ever. Any advice greatly appreciated

  • What operating system?

bring up the task manager in wiindows (right click on task bar) and see if there is a process that is tying up the CPU (should all be 00 or 01 ish except system idle). post the results here.

do you have auto updates turned on for windows or your virus checker

Is it just Explorer running slow? If not, maybe your hard disk just needs defragmenting.
  • My pc can boot into windows 98 or windows NT. Seperate C drives are set up for 98 and NT. In NT I don't have a problem.
When I boot into win98 I have 2 choices. 1 boots using modem drivers and that seems to be alright. The other boots using network drivers and that seems to be where the problem lies. I noticed things a bit wrong when I tried to delete a program through add/remove programs and it wouldn't let me because it was looking for a network location called \\doc1\home\j_smith\my documents\. this j smith is a guy at work. I'm wondering if its something to do with this. If it is how do I go about stopping it. The Pc seems ever so slow even trying to surf the internet. I've tried to locate the task manager but can't find it.

There is no Task Manager in Windows 98, but several third party offerings are available if you do a Google search. But given your problems it may take some time installing!
