Using Solar Panels to heat your hot water storage tank with its immersion heater is not generally a good idea because a less than 4kw panel system rarely has the nessacary 3kw required by the standard fitted immersion heater. So you would be paying for any shortfall at 11p a unit (British Gas Price) instead of your normal gas boiler being used at 4p a unit.
However; if you swap the 3kw immersion heater for a 1kw immersion heater; you could heat up your tank for free (during non cloudy days). Thus your Gas bills would be reduced
