A bit of advice please re Ebay

Hey just looking for a wee bit of advice from you experienced Ebayers!

I don't often sell on Ebay, but had 4 items, so thought I would give it a bash.

2 of my items sold to the same person, so I recalculated postage for them and sent a new invioce (without them asking me to) which they then paid on the 17th. I then posted on the 18th first class, I still have the proof of postage.

This evening I have recieved an email from them, saying the have recieved one item and do I have the other one? Now, I sent both items in the one envelope so I can't quite understand how they only got one, could this be someone trying to pull a fast one?

I replied saying both items were sent in the one envelope and couldn't understand how this had happened. I told them I posted on the 18th and asked when they recieved the items. Was this the right thing to do? I know it's done now though...

I also posted one of the same item to a different winner on the 17th and looking at the proof of postage, the weight for sending one was 0.102kg and the weight of sending two was 0.178kg so I know for sure that both items were in the envelope.

Hope that makes some kind of sense and you could maybe advise what I should do next? Many thanks in advance :)

  • Hi,

I would just hang fire and see what develops.

It is possible the packaging has been damaged and one item has been lost but this is rare, ask what condition the packaged arrived in and ask for photo if the continue.

If a claim is raised against on ebay you will probably loose, but then you can use the evidence with the weight etc.

    Good luck
  • Thanks for your reply. Should have asked that question, don't want to send another email before they reply, so I'll wait and see what they say.

I'm slightly suspicious because after they won the 2 items, they emailed to ask if I had anymore, to which I replied (possibly stupidly) I did, I had one more that I was relisting as it didn't sell 1st time, then never heard anymore about it. So the relisted item had one watcher, but ended yesterday with no bids, so I'm wondering if they watched it and seen that it didnt sell...Or maybe I'm just panicing over nothing, only time will tell I suppose ;)

I'd message them back, saying that both items were posted in the one packet. As above I'd ask if the packaging was damaged.
A couple of times I've had items where the packaging has been damaged & it's been sealed in a RM plastic bag, stating that the packaging was damaged.
Is it possible that the packet could split & just one of them fall out?
  • Well it was in a bubble envelope that was sealed, and the envelope was just the right size for the items, wasn't too big or anything, so I'm pretty sure that one couldn't have slipped out. I'm gonna go send another message and ask about the packaging and see what comes of that :)

Thanks for the replys. Hopefully it'll end well :o

  • Ok, I'm back again! :o

Got replies to the emails I sent last night saying she got one item on tuesday (posted 1st class friday) and is still waiting for the other one, even though I said they were both together in the one envelope. Then the other reply to the one where I asked if there was any damage, 'was no not to the one I got, havent got the other one yet'

So she's said herself that there was no damage. I have checked and double checked the addresses, making sure I didn't send 2 to the wrong person, but going by the weights on the reciepts, I know I didn't do that, as they were posted on different days.

So the question is, where do I go from here? Sent a reply again stating they were in the one envelope so if there was no damage I can't understanf how she has only got one. Would it be worth getting in touch with Ebay and see what they say?

By combining the postage that would suggest to me as a buyer I am going to receive both in the one envelope. You have stated to her that you sent them together in the one envelope. I can only see two possibilities really.

    1) The buyer is trying it on. Obviously one item hasn't fallen out of a sealed envelope so either she has both or she has removed one from the envelope and then thrown it away not realising there's still one inside.

    2) You don't say what it is you have sold, so is there any possibility that the buyer may think a pair constitutes 1 item?

As to what now? If common sense were to prevail eBay would see you combined postage, you have proof of posting, you can show that this envelope was heavier than another containing a single item and she admitted to receiving the envelope.

Unfortunately eBay doesn't seem to use common sense very often. If there is any doubt they will usually side with the buyer as it is your word against hers. eBay is all about protecting the buyers from scam sellers and unfortunately all sellers feel the brunt when something like this happens.
It may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type
  • Have you tried contacting the other buyer you sold to just to check that you haven't mixed it up?

I assume from this the OP has checked the weight of the parcels against the postcodes on the receipts and so knows where the heavier parcel went

I know, but it can't do any harm, the PO may have mixed them up, you never know.

Just seems like an odd thing for the buyer to try on when they've been told the items were sent together.

It was 2 items of clothing, the same but in 2 different colours and 2 different sizes, so don't think that could be the case.

Yeah I have a feeling this isn't going to end in my favour...Ah well, she hasn't asked for a refund or anything as yet, so will see what the next reply is.

Yeah that's exactly what I did!
I think I will do this as well though, just in case of some freak accident. Least that way I will have covered all my bases.

Thank you all for your replys, much appreciated :D
